Fall 2002 FHSAA Member School Student Population Report
Below is the preliminary Fall 2002 FHSAA Member School Student Population Report. Schools are listed in alphabetical order by the FHSAA's assigned common name.
Column 1 contains the school name and city of location.
Column 2 contains the actual Fall 2002 student population in grades 9 through 12 as reported by the school to the FHSAA Office.
Column 3 contains the student population number to be used in classifying the school for the 2003-04 and 2004-05 school years.
Column 4 contains the reason for any adjustment to the school's student population and/or other relevant comments.
Member schools should review the data below and immediately notify the FHSAA Office at (352) 372-9551 ext. 170 of any discrepancies.

The FHSAA assigns member senior high schools to classifications for the purpose of state championship series competition on the basis of their student populations. Effective with the 2003-04 school year, the student population in the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades combined will be used for this purpose. In the majority of cases, the school will be classified on the basis of the student population actually reported to the FHSAA Office. A school, however, may have its student population adjusted for the following three reasons:

(1) If a school's student population is predominantly (90 percent or more) comprised of a single gender, its student population is doubled for the purpose of classification.
(2) If a school currently does not house students in all four grades, its student population is adjusted according to by-grade percentages of the total student population of all FHSAA member schools (see below).
(3) If a public school's student population will be reduced by the opening of a new public school in Fall 2003 or by the redrawing of attendance zone boundaries, the school may request that it be classified on the basis of a Fall 2003 projected student population. The projection must be certified and submitted by the district school board office that oversees the school.

The FHSAA's 582 current member senior high schools submitted a total population of 735,518 students, of which:
• 245,571 students, or 33.4 percent, were 9th graders;
• 186,711 students, or 25.4 percent, were 10th graders;
• 162,343 students, or 22.1 percent, were 11th graders: and
• 140,893 students, or 19.1 percent, were 12th graders.
Consequently, in adjusting the student population of a school that does not house students in all four grades, the following formulas will be used:
• If the school does not house a 9th grade, it will have 33.4 percent of its student population added to its total.
• If the school currently has only the 9th grade, it will have 43.2 percent of its student population added to its total (statewide, the 10th grade constitutes 43.2 percent of the population of the 9th and 10th grades combined).
• If the school currently has only the 9th and 10th grades, it will have 27.3 percent of its student population added to its total (statewide, the 11th grade constitutes 27.3 percent of the population of the 9th, 10th and 11th grades combined).
• If the school currently has only the 9th, 10th and 11th grades, it will have 19.1 percent of its student population added to its total (statewide, the 12th grade constitutes 19.1 percent of the population of the 9th, 10th, 11th and 12 grades combined).

New public high schools that will open in Fall 2003, with their projected student populations as provided by their respective district school board offices, are denoted in italics.
