Lake Howell High School Named Winner of 2019 Sunshine State Spirit Showdown Contest

GAINESVILLE, FL. – Lake Howell High School was named the winner of the 2019 Sunshine State Spirit Showdown, the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) announced Tuesday. The competition, which determines the best student section in the state, began in 2014 as a way of promoting sportsmanship and celebrating school spirit among FHSAA member schools.

After schools from around the state submitted videos highlighting their student sections, the Silverhawks beat out seven other finalists for the award. The FHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee scored the videos on the criteria of sportsmanship, participation, organization of students and spirit conveyed through the submissions. Fans also showed their support by voting for their favorite video via social media, which contributed to the overall scores.

"After a very tough decision, we voted for Lake Howell High School due to their high energy and infectious attitude," FHSAA SAAC member Brooke Long said. "Student sections often provide us with the highlights of our experiences as student-athletes, and our committee was able to relate to and appreciate the spontaneous details Lake Howell showcased in their video."

Later this year at an on-campus ceremony, the FHSAA will present Lake Howell with a commemorative plaque and a personalized banner to commemorate their victory.
