Michael Anthony "Mike" Knowles

Michael Knowles is one of the most active high school contest officials in Florida. His 31-year career includes officiating basketball, baseball and volleyball contests, as well as many leadership roles for the state and nation.

Knowles has officiated 16 basketball and five baseball state finals for the FHSAA since 1988. He was the president, vice president and booking commissioner for the Gulf Coast Basketball Association from 1980 to 1986, the vice president of the Mid-Coast Officials Association from 1987 to 1991, and the booking commissioner and secretary-treasurer of the Florida West Baseball Umpires Association over the past nine years. From 2001 to the present, Knowles has served as the state director of the National Federation Officials Association, and is the NFOA representative on the FHSAA Officials Advisory Committee. He has also officiated college basketball from 1977-1996 and college baseball from 1979 to 2002.

Knowles has been the State Active Official of the Year in both basketball and baseball, and was the Section Three (Southeastern United States) Active Official of the Year in 2001. He was honored as the Florida Basketball Officials Association Male Official of the Year in 2002-03.

Aside from his accomplishments as an official, Knowles also has had experience as a head football coach at Satellite and Middleburg high schools, He now serves as the head girls golf coach at Manatee High School in Bradenton, where he teaches American government and politics. Knowles is active in the Florida Athletic Coaches Association, having served as a board of directors member well as the FACA officials liaison.
