Gary Droze
Inducted 2018

Gary Droze was inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2018 after more than a quarter of a century of winning championships for the Maclay School Cross Country and Track & Field teams.

After representing the United States Air Force Academy in the NCAA Cross Country Championships in 1981, Droze went on to represent his country in the World Military Cross-Country Championships in Portugal in 1985. It was during these years where Droze's passion and desire to coach were birthed, beginning his coaching career as the assistant track and cross country coach at Choctawhatchee High School while stationed at Eglin Air Force Base from 1983-86.

Droze has won 20 combined cross country and track & field team state championships, was runner-up an additional 16 times and has helped guide his runners to a whopping 57 individual and relay state championships. He has also won 52 combined regional team titles and 79 combined district team titles. For 22-consecutive years, Droze has qualified the Maclay Boy’s and Girl’s cross country squads for the Florida High School Cross Country State Championships.

The 2013 Florida Dairy Farmers Boys Track & Field Coach of the Year has served on both the FHSAA Track & Field and Cross Country Advisory Committees. In addition, he has been the head coach for the Florida Athletic Coaches Association North Cross Country All-Stars, and has been the featured speaker at cross country seminars around the Southeast for over a decade.

Droze gave high school student-athletes in his city the opportunity to pursue their love of running collegiately in 2016 by creating and heading up the cross country program at Tallahassee Community College. Since 1986, he has been the director of weekly track workouts for the Gulf Winds Track Club in Tallahassee.
