Charles Felix Smith

Administrator/Coach/Contest Official
Inducted 2004

Charles Smith has seen and done it all over the past 40 years. He has been a student-athlete, teacher, administrator, coach and contest official, and served as the FHSAA Director of Field Services (now known as Director of Athletics) from 1982 to 1991.

A three-sport athlete at Cocoa High School from 1958 to 1961, Smith played for the 1960 Class A state championship basketball team. He was an All-State selection in football and basketball, and was the county and conference champion in the long jump three times. Smith was Brevard Junior College’s leading scorer in basketball as a freshman, and played for Georgia Southern’s NAIA runner-up team in 1966.

Smith went on to coach football, boys basketball and track & field at Jackson Junior High School, and added girls basketball, softball and cross country to his coaching resume when he moved to Cocoa High School in the early 1970s. He also was the athletic and student activities director. Smith was instrumental in the implementation of girls athletics in Brevard County as the assistant chair of the Brevard County Gender Equity/Title IX Committee.

A contest official since 1964, Smith officiated three state football and two state basketball finals. He assigned more than 4,700 games as the booking commissioner for the Mid-Coast Officials Association in Titusville from 1977 to 1981. He received the National Federation of Interscholastic Officials Associations’ Distinguished Service Award in 1992.

In his position at the FHSAA, Smith served as the supervisor of officials and was a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations football rules committee. He implemented day-long training clinics for officials associations across the state in football and basketball. At that time, when the FHSAA also included student activities in addition to athletics, Smith served as the state director for the Florida Association of Student Councils and the Florida Chapters of the National Honor Society.

Smith is currently the administrative coordinator for the Florida Community College Activities Association, Inc. in Tallahassee. The National Junior College Athletic Association honored him for his service in 2000.
