Bob West

Inducted 2016

Bishop Kenny High School Director of Athletics Bob West was inducted into the Florida High School Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 after excelling as both a baseball coach and administrator for more than three decades.

As a baseball coach, the 1971 Robert E. Lee High School graduate went 532-129 overall in 23 years as a head coach (1981-84, 1985-2005), tallying one state championship (2002), 10 trips to the Final Four and 16 district titles. West coached seven nationally-ranked teams, had 75 players go on to sign baseball scholarships and watched seven players of the year compete under him. Six of his players went on to play Major League Baseball, while two were named All-Americans and 21 more earned All-State honors.

In terms of baseball coaching accolades, West was named the ABCA Southeastern Coach of the Year once, the Florida Coach of the Year twice, the Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year once and the District Coach of the Year a whopping eight times.

In 1989, West began his serving as the BKHS athletic director, where he remains today. Since then, he has added eight sports to the program, won 25 state championships and helped bring in more than $5 million worth of improvements to all athletic facilities on campus. Three times, his athletic department has won the Class 4A FHSAA Program of the Year Award.

Valuing off the field results as much as on the field results, the 1975 University of North Florida graduate has made sure BKHS also produced championship results in the classroom, leading the Crusaders to three FHSAA Overall Academic Team championships. He has also overseen his school winning twice the FHSAA Sportsmanship Award, as well as two student-athletes being named the FHSAA Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The last 12 years, 78% of Bishop Kenny student-athletes have yielded a GPA of 3.0 or better.

A lifetime member of the American Baseball Association, the FIAAA member also established a sports medicine program with Jacksonville Orthopedic Institute which has been used as a model throughout the state.

From 2002 to 2016, the Jacksonville, Florida, native has spent his spare time serving in various leadership positions within the Florida High School Athletic Association, including a stint on the Board of Directors from 2007-14 and as the president during the 2013-14 school year. West served as an associate scout for the Atlanta Braves, Miami Marlins and Baltimore Orioles and is also is a member of the FHSAA Urban/Rural Committee.
