Aubrey Rentz

Aubrey Rentz's name is synonymous with Freeport High School athletics.

A native of Blakely, Ga., Rentz participated in baseball, basketball, football and track & field at Blakely High School from 1952-56, and made the football and cross country teams at Troy State University in Alabama before entering the Army in 1961. In 1963, he became the head boys and girls track & field coach at Freeport High School, where he remained until his retirement in 2003.

Rentz coached his girls track & field team to a state title in 1986 and state runner-up status in 1984, and went undefeated in regular-season meets for seven years in the 1980s. The boys team finished third at the state meet in 1968 and won 64 regular season meets in the 1970s. He also coached the boys and girls cross country programs for 25 years, taking the girls team to a third-place finish at the state meet in 1986.

He coached the boys basketball team for 11 years, winning a state title in boys basketball in 1968 and amassing a 176-113 record. He was selected as the North All-Star Basketball Coach in 1968. Rentz also coached the girls basketball team from 1981-1999, with a career record of 245-159. He started both the football and softball programs at Freeport and was the first head coach for each program. Rentz always ensured that his girls teams were provided for as well as the boys, and often contributed his own money when funds were low.

Rentz was named Coach of the Year for boys basketball in 1968 and girls track & field in 1986. The Freeport High School gymnasium is named for him.
