Winter athletic season Academic Team Champions announced

The Academic Team Champions for the winter of 2011-12 have been announced, as well as the overall classification standings. Each classification and overall sport winner receives a commemorative plaque. For overall classification winners, the top 10 schools in each category will receive points. Ten points will be awarded for a first place finish, nine points for second, etc. The school in each class with the highest cumulative point total for the entire school year will get a special award. Points awarded for teams in single-class sports will still count toward the overall standings.

GAINESVILLE – Olympia (Orlando), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Gainesville American Heritage (Plantation), Bolles (Jacksonville), Cocoa Beach, Tampa Prep, P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Sarasota Christian and Union County (Lake Butler) lead their respective categories following winter sports competition in the 2011-12 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards Point Standings. 

 Olympia, with 523 points in Class 8A, moved into first place, edging fall leader Plant (Tampa) by just six points. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) has totaled 769.5 points to open up what was a close race with Martin County (Stuart) in Class 7A, which finished the winter with 590 points. Gainesville had a strong winter season to total 503 points, which is almost a 30-point lead over the fall's top school in Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton), which has 473.5 points. American Heritage (Plantation), with 793 points, holds a 291-point lead over Ponte Vedra. Bolles (Jacksonville), with 903 points, is way out in front of the Class 4A private schools, 353 points better than second-place Lake Highland Prep (Orlando). Cocoa Beach continues to lead the Class 4A public school category with 217 points, but is now only 12 points ahead of Godby (Tallahassee). In Class 3A private schools, Tampa Prep, thanks in large part to the school's first-ever boys basketball state title, overtook Maclay (Tallahassee) -- 507 to 451.5. P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), with 308 points, sets the pace in the Class 3A/2A combined public school category, while second-place FAMU made some big strides in the winter but still trails by 83 points. The closest race is in the Class 2A private school category where Sarasota Christian has 188 points compared to Grandview Prep's (Boca Raton) 185 points. In the new rural Class 1A Union County (Lake Butler) remains on top with 251 points, 46 points better than second place Chipley.

For the 2011-12 school year, the 695 member senior high schools have been divided into eight classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2010, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 2A, 3A and 4A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these 10 categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2011-12 school year.

Due to a lack of eligible schools, class 2A public and class 3A public will be combined into one category for the 2011-12 school year

Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In bracket sports, points are awarded as follows: 100 for the state champion, 90 for the state runner-up, 83 for the state semifinalists, 60 for 5-8th places, and 25 for 9-16th places. In non-bracket sports, points are awarded as follows: 100, 90, 85, 80, 70, 63, 56, 49, 38, 34, 30, 26, 22, 18, 14, 10. Schools get a 5-point bonus for winning a district or regional championship, and points are deducted for unsporting conduct: 0.5 points for Level 1 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 1.0 for Level 2 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 2.0 for Level 3 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 5.0 for Level 4 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 2.0 for Level 1 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 3.0 for Level 2 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 4.0 for Level 3 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; and approximately 3-5 additional points deducted for a school or team-based violation (e.g., bench-clearing brawl, coaches takes team off the field, etc.). When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored in their communities during the 2012-13 school year.

Gainesville, FL (Feb. 2, 2012) – The FHSAA Network will broadcast the FHSAA competitive cheerleading championships live from the Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee, beginning Thursday, Feb. 2. All competitions will be streamed LIVE at www.FHSAAsports.com, archived for on demand viewing and DVDs will be available for sale.

Tentative Competitive Cheerleading finals schedule released

The tentative schedule for the FHSAA competitive cheerleading championship Feb. 2-4 has been released. The schedule is subject to change. The latest schedule will always be posted on the competitive cheerleading page. The file below lists the schedule for all three days. Team data forms (CH2) and photo no longer needed for competitive cheerleading finals

The team data form (CH2) and team photograph are no longer needed by schools for the competitive cheerleading state finals. The FHSAA will not be producing a souvenir program like it has in the past, which had this information. However, the AACCA certificate and state entry lists are still due for all competing coaches and squads.

Competitive Cheerleading state finals increased by one day

The FHSAA has added one day for competition at the 2012 state finals to be held at Silver Spurs Arena in Kissimmee. Competition will now begin on Thursday, Feb. 2 and will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 4. A tentative schedule of events will be posted in the near future.

Region 1 Competitive Cheer competition moved to Ridgeview

Please be advised that the Region 1 Competitive Cheer competition has been moved to Ridgeview High School in Orange Park and will be hosted on Saturday, December 17, 2011. It is imperative that you forward this information to your head varsity competitive cheerleading coach.

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience or confusion this may have caused. However, with new staff and the lack of a competitive cheer program at Crestview High School for the 2011-12 season, this adjustment was necessary.

We look forward to another great season of competitive cheer and a first class event hosted by Ridgeview High School! Please don’t hesitate to contact me with any questions you may have and best of luck in the upcoming season!

Score reporting update

Score Reporting Update

There are three ways you are able to report a score in C2C. Make sure you always fill in the FINAL column as that is what gets reported. Athletic directors—please make sure you have given your coaches the appropriate privileges in the "Staff and Privileges" section on the Dashboard.

On your dashboard, you will receive an alert after a competition has been played. It will be displayed like this “A matchup for Varsity Boys Football on August 26th requires a score.” There will be a View button that you can click on and it will take you to the place to enter the score.
From the dashboard, click on Sports Teams and then select the team you wish to report the score for. Next, select the game from the schedule and click the Results tab on the right. At the bottom, you will click the Scores button and enter in the Score.
You will be able to purchase a mobile C2C score reporting app called CoachMe. You will have Alerts button on the app that will also allow you to add your scores directly from your mobile phone.

NFHS rules on feathers in Spirit Cheerleading

Many questions have been raised about the legality of cheerleaders wearing feathers in the hair. The NFHS interpretation is as follows:

Feathers in the hair should be treated in the same manner as other hair devices such as ribbons and bows. Rule 2-3-3 requires hair devices to be secure and hair to be worn in a manner that is appropriate for the activity involved. If a feather is not securely affixed or could interfere with the participant’s vision or the safe execution of stunts or tumbling, it would be illegal. If, however, a feather is securely affixed to the hair and does not present a risk of interfering with the participant’s vision or interfering with the safe execution of stunts or tumbling it would be legal.

Situation/Ruling:

2.3.3 SITUATION: During a release transition one bracer is wearing a long feather in her hair that: (a) is secured away from her face by a flat barrette; (b) hangs loose while the rest of her hair is secured in a ponytail. RULING: (a) Legal; (b) illegal.

Officials to participate in "Calling for a Cure" campaign

Some FHSAA contest officials have agreed to participate in the “Calling for a Cure” campaign. By participating, these officials have agreed to donate their game fee, or a portion of their game fee, to the American Cancer Society. The dates for participation in the state of Florida are as follows:

Oct. 3-8, 2011
Jan. 9-14, 2012
March 19-24, 2012

If you notice that the contest officials are using pink whistles during the contest, this means these officials have agreed to make an individual donation in this effort. If this is the case, the FHSAA kindly asks that you acknowledge this participation through the public address announcement found below. Please make the announcement a minimum of two times during the contest. For football, make the announcement between quarters. In volleyball, make the announcement once between the first and second game in a match, and then again between the second and third game in a match.

USA Cheer and AACCA join CDC in raising concussion awareness

FHSAA welcomes 35 new schools to the Association

The Board of Directors at its year-end meeting on June 13-14, 2011 voted to accept 35 new members into the FHSAA, with 33 of them being high schools/combination schools. The Association also saw nine high schools/combination schools and six middle schools leave. That list is at the bottom of the page. It is very important to check these lists! Scroll through the entire page to gather information about member and former member schools. Please note that the Approved Nonmembership level is no longer in place with the FHSAA. If a former Approved Nonmember school was not granted provisional membership, then that school can no longer be scheduled or played.

About the FHSAA/Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Awards
The FHSAA/Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Awards program was implemented during the 1990-91 school year by the Florida High School Athletic Association to honor those schools that exhibited exemplary sportsmanship during the regular season and FHSAA State Series. Each year the award is presented to one school in each classification whose total sports program best exemplifies the qualities of sportsmanship by its coaches, players and spectators. Nomination forms for this award are provided to each member school FHSAA representative and officials' association. Criteria for selection of the winners includes programs and activities implemented within the school and community to promote sportsmanship; number and type of unsportsmanlike ejections; number and type of exceptional sportsmanship reports; and source of the nomination. An anonymous selection committee of representatives from the sports community reviews all nominations and selects the winners. There may be one winner from each of the four sections in all seven classifications; the overall winner in each classification shall be chosen from the section winners. The section winners will each receive $500 and a commemorative plaque. The overall winners will each receive an additional $2,500 and a larger plaque. The award is named for FHSAA Commissioner Emeritus Fred E. Rozelle, who served as the Association’s Executive Secretary and Commissioner from 1980-1991.

Dr. Phillips, St. Thomas Aquinas, FAMU sweep FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports awards

GAINESVILLE – Dr. Phillips (Orlando), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and FAMU (Tallahassee) swept the top overall, boys and girls awards in their respective classifications in the final 2010-11 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings. Barron Collier (Naples), Bolles (Jacksonville), Cocoa Beach, Trinity Prep (Winter Park), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) and Oak Hall (Gainesville) also won the overall awards in their respective classifications.

Dr. Phillips, with 1,283 points, holds a 364-point margin over the second place finisher and rival, Winter Park, in the Class 6A overall standings. St. Thomas Aquinas totalled 1,152 points to take the lead in Class 5A over Niceville, which finished with 581 points. Barron Collier topped Class 4A with 644 points, edging Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton), which finished with 610.5 points. Bolles, with 993.5 points, is out in front of the Class 3A private schools, 145 points better than second-place American Heritage (Plantation). Cocoa Beach leads the Class 3A public school category with 305 points, just 13 points better than Jones (Orlando). In Class 2A private schools, Trinity Prep (Winter Park), with 714.5 points, boasted a 163.5-point margin over Northside Christian (St. Petersburg). P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), with 374 points, set the pace in Class 2A public schools, while second-place Port St. Joe finished with 224 points. Oak Hall (Gainesville), with 420.5 points, finished 113.5 points better than second-place Summit Christian (West Palm Beach) in the Class 1A private school category. Finally, FAMU (Tallahassee) earned the lead in the Class 1A public school category with 183.5 points, 148.5 points ahead of Laurel Hill.

For the 2010-11 school year, the 674 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2008, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2010-11 school year.

Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In bracket sports, points are awarded as follows: 100 for the state champion, 90 for the state runner-up, 83 for the state semifinalists, 60 for 5-8th places, and 25 for 9-16th places. In non-bracket sports, points are awarded as follows: 100, 90, 85, 80, 70, 63, 56, 49, 38, 34, 30, 26, 22, 18, 14, 10. Schools get a 5-point bonus for winning a district or regional championship, and points are deducted for unsporting conduct: 0.5 points for Level 1 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 1.0 for Level 2 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 2.0 for Level 3 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 5.0 for Level 4 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 2.0 for Level 1 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 3.0 for Level 2 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 4.0 for Level 3 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; and approximately 3-5 additional points deducted for a school or team-based violation (e.g., bench-clearing brawl, coach takes team off the field, etc.). When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored in their communities during the 2011-12 school year.

Declarations of candidacy for officials advisory committee now available

Members of the FHSAA Officials Advisory Committee are officials who have been elected by their primary officials association. The committee is composed of 28 members, one official from each administrative section in each of the seven sanctioned sports in which officials are registered by the FHSAA. This committee meets annually to review the officials program and make recommendations for changes if any, to the FHSAA Board of Directors.

Candidates for election to the Officials Advisory Committee must be FHSAA officials in good standing, be registered in the same sport as the seat for which they are being nominated, and be nominated by their primary local officials association. Each local officials association may nominate one official for each sport in which they are sanctioned by the FHSAA.

The deadlines to apply are:
Fall sports: June 20, 2011
Winter sports: Sept. 1, 2011
Spring sports: Jan. 10, 2012

Clarification issued in high school spirit rules

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (April 7, 2011) — A clarification of the high school spirit rules dealing with allowable stunts on a basketball court or track approved earlier this year by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Spirit Rules Committee has been issued.

In addition to basket tosses, elevator tosses or similar multi-base tosses that must take place only on grass (real or artificial) or a mat, airborne twisting tumbling skills can only be performed on grass or a mat as well.

"The original release distributed earlier this year had a comma between twisting and tumbling, making it appear that all tumbling was prohibited on hard surfaces," said Susan Loomis, NFHS spirit consultant and liaison to the Spirit Rules Committee. "That, of course, is not the correct interpretation. What has been relegated to grass or a mat from a risk minimization concern are twisting tumbling skills while airborne."

Vero Beach, East Lake (Tarpon Springs), Lakewood Ranch (Bradenton), Berkeley Prep (Tampa), Lakeland Christian and Posnack Jewish (Plantation) lead their classes in the overall standings

The Academic Team Champions for the winter sports have been announced and can be found by clicking here.

For the first time ever, the FHSAA will be awarding a year-end overall Academic Team Champion in each of the six classes. Points will be given for where a school places in each of the categories, similar to the All-Sports Awards. The top 10 schools in each category will receive points. Ten points will be awarded for a first place finish, nine points for second, etc. The school in each class with the highest cumulative point total for the entire school year will get a special award. Points awarded for teams in single-class sports will still count toward the overall standings. To access the link for the standings after the winter sports click here.

Nominations for Officials Association of the Year now open

This is the highest honor awarded by the FHSAA to a local officials association deemed to have contributed at the highest level of excellence to Florida high school athletics. Each local association may nominate one association for this award per year. Among the factors that may be considered are recruitment, retention, education/training, professionalism and innovation.

The deadline to submit the nomination is April 29, 2011. The form is below.

This award will be presented at the 2011 Officials Leadership Conference on Saturday, June 11 in Gainesville.

Spirit rules changes focus on performing surfaces

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (February 14, 2011) — The new high school spirit rules changes approved by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Spirit Rules Committee at its January 8-10 meeting minimize the risk potential created by certain performance surfaces, props or stunts. The changes, which were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors, will take effect with the 2011-12 school year.

One of the most significant changes deals with allowable stunts on a basketball court or track. Changes to Rules 2-6-7, 2-9-7 and 2-10-2 require that any airborne twisting, tumbling skills, basket tosses, elevator tosses or similar multi-base tosses take place only on grass (real or artificial) or a mat.

Similarly, twisting during quick/load-in tosses is restricted to grass (real or artificial) or a mat per changes made to Rule 2-10-7.

Susan Loomis, NFHS spirit consultant and liaison to the Spirit Rules Committee, said the committee is sensitive to the ever-changing skill level of the participants while keeping risk minimization in mind.

“We wanted to write the best rules we can to allow spirit teams and dance teams to show their skills, while keeping our focus on minimizing risk,” Loomis said. “I think the new rules demonstrate a continuing effort to help protect and train our cheer and dance coaches.”

Rules 2-4-6 and 3-5-9 were amended to further safety precautions. Spotters are now prohibited from holding objects in their hands and also must be present if a participant is standing on a moving flat-bottom prop that has a fabric cover.

Dance, drill and pom teams may now wear footwear that at a minimum covers the ball of the foot. A new exception also allows dancers to be barefoot if on a floor cover.

An exception to Rule 2-12-2b now allows a backward leapfrog to a prone position with two catchers and continuous hand-to-hand contact between the top person and post.

“We added the exception because we have seen that our teams are improving in skill and are able to perform certain stunts well,” Loomis said.

The final change applies to swinging stunts, which are now allowed only from cradles or the performing surface. The addition of a note to Rule 2-8-11c allows for a slight downward swing to prepare for the upward swing.

“We added the note for clarification,” Loomis said. “We realize that some extra movements are required to prepare certain stunts and wanted to make that clear in the rules book.”

The Spirit Rules Book was also reorganized to better serve the coaches and other readers, Loomis added.

Competitive spirit squads constitute the ninth-most popular activity for girls at the high school level, according to the 2009-10 High School Athletics Participation Survey conducted by the NFHS, with 123,644 participants nationwide. There are also 24,952 girls who participate in dance or drill teams, according to the same survey.

Title IX Reports and Competitive Cheerleading

During the Florida High School Athletic Association’s January Board of Directors Meeting, it was brought to the Board’s attention in some circumstances local schools and district school boards were being told that Competitive Cheerleading would not count in gender equity for your report to the Florida Department of Education.

With this letter, I am also enclosing three attachments. The first attachment (4 pages) is a letter written, by then FHSAA Commissioner Dr. John Stewart, to the Florida Department of Education. The letter, dated October 15, 2007, is a requirement by the Office of Civil Rights in order for the state association to certify to the Commissioner of Education at the state level that the eleven factor test is being met by the sport of competitive cheerleading (as oppose to sideline cheerleading). The second attachment (1 page) dated October 24, 2007, is a letter written, by then FLDOE Commissioner of Education, Dr. Jeanine Blomberg, confirming that the requirement had been met and “The schools that submit competitive cheerleading as a sport, as part of the Title IX report, will be included as such.” The third and final attachment (1 page) dated March 13, 2008, is a letter written, by then FLDOE Public School Chancellor, Frances Haithcock, confirming that the requirement had been met and “All schools and districts that submit competitive cheerleading as a sport on the Annual Equity Report and Updates does so as certification that all specified requirements are being followed.”

The only changes in Competitive Cheerleading since those confirmation letters are; enhancements to the sport, an increase in the number of competitions, an increase in the number of schools participating and the addition of regional competitions and two state championships. Please utilize this correspondence (and attachments) if needed in your Equity Report, as long as your school and school district are continuing to ensure the eleven-factor test (as stated in Dr. Stewart’s October 15, 2007 letter).

Student Athlete Advisory Committee re-established, seeking nominations

The FHSAA would like to extend the opportunity for student-athletes in member schools to participate as part of the FHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The purpose of the committee will be to provide a voice for student-athletes within the FHSAA governance structure, in the following areas:

Current issues facing student-athletes
Input regarding rules and regulations
Input on FHSAA special initiatives (e.g., sportsmanship campaign)
Promotion of a positive image of the student-athlete.

The 16-member statewide committee will meet once or twice annually at the Robert W. Hughes FHSAA Building in Gainesville. A student’s participation would involve a trip to the meeting, accompanied by a chaperone. Expenses (e.g. mileage, lodging, per diem) will be paid as outlined in the FHSAA travel reimbursement policy.

Please review the nomination form below and select two student-athletes (one male and one female) in your school who have an interest in serving on the committee. The FHSAA is interested in applicants who possess the following qualities:

Must be an active student-athlete participating in at least one FHSAA-sanctioned sport;
Must be a sophomore (rising junior) or junior (rising senior) in good academic and disciplinary standing;
Must show a commitment toward representing the interests of all student-athletes;
Must display strong character and commitment to sportsmanship and integrity; and
Must demonstrate leadership in your school.

Review of Bylaw 9.2.4, "Participation in Non-School Athletic Activities Affiliated with a School"

There has been a significant increase this school year in eligibility rulings, sectional appeals hearings and violations regarding Bylaw 9.2.4, “Participation in Non-School Athletic Activities Affiliated with a School.” Please review Bylaw 9.2.4, which is worded in its entirety below as stated in the 2010-11 member handbook. The edited language for the 2010-11 member handbook is underlined.

9.2.4 Participation in Non-School Athletic Activities Affiliated with a School. The FHSAA supports and endorses Florida’s philosophy of school of choice for academic purposes. However, if a student chooses to attend or participate for a school, public or private, in which the student participated in any non-school athletic activities affiliated with a school that the student does not attend or did not attend in the previous school year (in the case of home education students, does not participate for or did not participate for) and then establishes his/her school residence (in the case of home education students, he/she participates) at the affiliated school within one calendar year of such participation will not be eligible in the new school until the student has been in attendance at that school for one calendar year. Establishing such school residence is bona fide evidence that the student is attending the school in whole or in part for athletic reasons.
9.2.4.1 Non-School Athletic Activities Affiliated with a School. Non-school athletic activities affiliated with a school are any athletic activities not sponsored by the school but are organized, coached and/or supervised by a school employee, athletic department staff member, or representative of the school’s athletic interests (as defined by FHSAA Policy 36.2.1.1), or in which the majority of participants are students who attend the school. Such activities include, but are not limited to:
(a) club teams;
(b) travel teams;
(c) grade school teams;
(d) recreational league teams;
(e) personal instruction sessions; and
(f) any other type of activity determined by the FHSAA to be an athletic activity.

Board expands classifications in team sports, creates rural division

GAINESVILLE - The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted today to create a rural classification in most sanctioned team sports, and to increase the number of classifications in sanctioned team sports.

The reclassification plan for football renames Classes 1A and 1B to reflect the new 1A rural and 1A urban designations. Tentative districts will be available online in December, allowing for final Board of Directors approval of appeals during the January 2011 meeting.

In baseball, basketball, softball and girls volleyball, the existing six-class structure was augmented by Class 7A and the rural classification. Boys and girls soccer added Class 7A for a total of six classifications. For a breakdown of the classifications by school population numbers, click here.

“When the FHSAA originally went up to six classifications in team sports in 1999, we had 517 member schools, with 480 of those playing team sports. Now that we have 670 member schools and 650 of those in team sports, the number of teams in individual districts is too large,” said Executive Director Roger Dearing. “Moving to eight classifications allows for fewer teams in each district, which allows for more flexibility in scheduling for the season.”

In other action, the Board of Directors:

Approved the appointments of the individuals for the specified terms as presented to fill the non-expired or vacated seats on the Representative Assembly: Heidi Michaels, athletic director, Anclote (Holiday), Public Schools Division 13; Ebony White, athletic director, Mount Dora, Public Schools Division 14; Carlos Ochoa, athletic director, Hialeah Gardens, Public Schools Division 29; Lisa Eaves, athletic director, Rocky Bayou Christian (Niceville), Private Schools Divisions 1-2; Matthew Olesnevich, athletic director, St. Francis (Gainesville), Private Schools Divisions 5-6; Linda Gomez, athletic director, Community Christian (Melbourne), Private Schools Divisions 9-10; Jacqueline Patsche, athletic director, Gifford Middle (Vero Beach), Middle Schools Section 3.

Denied endorsement of bylaw proposals from two member schools for consideration and possible adoption by the 2011 Representative Assembly.
Approved a recommendation of the Baseball Advisory Committee and the Athletic Directors Advisory Committee to allow the pitcher to be listed as P/DH on the line-up card.
Heard a report on FHSAA recognized and sanctioned sports versus club sports.
Heard a report on Bylaw 9.2.4 – Policy 22 and Policy 36.
