Choctawhatchee Crowned 2018 Sunshine State Spirit Showdown Champion

GAINESVILLE, Fla. – Sometimes when competing in high school athletics, there comes a point when sport teams needs to add a little fuel to their fire. The student section provides that fuel as they cheer for their teams through the good and even the bad times. The Sunshine State Spirit Showdown competition was designed specifically for this purpose to promote sportsmanship and school spirit. On Monday, the FHSAA’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee announced Choctawhatchee as the winner of the fifth annual Sunshine State Spirit Showdown.

This year, six schools submitted videos who have never participated in the contest. These video submissions were judged by the FHSAA Student-Athlete Advisory Committee on the criteria of sportsmanship, participation, school spirit, original cheers, organization of students and overall fun. Additionally, fan voting was factored into the final decision.

“Choctawhatchee’s video was very unique and stood out from the rest of the videos in a way that caught all of our attention,” FHSAA SAAC member and Marathon High School senior Esteban Sainz said. “The mixture of the perspectives from the different students along with a very exciting overall video were key contributing factors that gave Choctawhatchee High School the victory in the 2018 Sunshine State Spirit Showdown.”

Choctawhatchee will receive a commemorative plaque and a personalized banner from the FHSAA at a ceremony to recognize their student body for showcasing their school spirit.

Choctawhatchee along with the videos submitted by the 10 other finalists can be found on the FHSAA’s YouTube Channel.
