FHSAA Officials Basketball Training To Take Place This Weekend

GAINESVILLE, FL (11/9/17) – To ensure and maintain the high quality of officiating statewide, more than 1,500 Florida High School Athletic Association basketball officials will partake in training this weekend across the state of Florida. More than 80 schools will compete against each other at 13 different locations, giving basketball officials a chance to perfect their craft.

With abuse and mistreatment at an all-time high, teams, coaches and student-athletes around the state are encouraged to show their respect for officials on social media by tweeting a word of appreciation using the hashtag #FHSAAOfficialsIn addition, Floridians are encouraged to become a new official at www.BecomeAnOfficial.org.

“We all must work together to solve the statewide shortage of quality officials,” FHSAA Executive Director George Tomyn said. “They are a vital component of high school athletics and we are committed to their craft.”

2017 FHSAA Basketball Official Training Goals:

1.      Common basketball officiating curriculum provided by FHSAA and taught by our top officials with the goal of statewide consistency.

2.      Coaches and Officials question-and-answer session to bridge the gap between the two groups.

3.      Train all officials with instant on-field feedback.

4.      Encourage Associations to use the training to help develop playoff crews.
