St. Thomas Aquinas, American Heritage (Plantation), Bolles sweep FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports awards

GAINESVILLE – St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale - 7A), American Heritage (Plantation - 5A) and Bolles (Jacksonville - 4A Private) swept the top overall, boys and girls awards in their respective classifications in the final 2014-15 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings. First-time winners Cypress Bay (Weston - 8A), Creekside (St. Johns - 6A) and Cedar Key (1A) are joined by P.K. Yonge (Gainesvile - 4A Public), Maclay (Tallahassee - 3A Private), FAMU (Tallahassee - 3A/2A Public) and Sarasota Christian (2A Private) as classification champions.

For just the second time in the history of the award, the 8A title resides outside the Central Florida counties of Orange and Seminole. Last year's 8A All Sports runner-up, Weston's Cypress Bay, with 140 points and three state championships, beat out Winter Park and its 116 points. St. Thomas Aquinas totaled 225.75 points to earn the win in Class 7A over Chiles (Tallahassee), which finished with 153 points. Last year's top two teams switched positions in 6A. This time it was Creekside with 128 points beating Barron Collier's (Naples) 111 points. American Heritage, with 185.75 points, has the highest score of any 5A school in 2014-15, easily defeating Merritt Island by 80.75 points. This is American Heritage's fourth straight scoring title. Bolles, with 189.75 points, took home victory among the Class 4A private schools, finishing 26 points better than second-place Lake Highland Prep (Orlando).

P.K. Yonge is back on top of the 4A public school category with 56.5 points, edging second place Coral Springs Charter by just six points. P.K. Yonge was not on top of either gender, though, as Godby (Tallahassee) won the boys division and Coral Springs Charter won the girls division for the first time. After a one-year hiatus from the top of the standings, Maclay is the winner among Class 3A private schools with 103.25 points, as Holy Trinity (Melbourne) finished a close second with 92.25 points. Maclay's girls program was edged by Lakeland Christian, 55-51. FAMU, with 45 points, won its sixth All Sports trophy in the combined 3A/2A public school category, beating SLAM Academy (Miami), which had 13.25 points. All of SLAM's points came in the boys category, securing its first-ever win there. North Bay Haven (Panama City) finished second, while FAMU came in third amongst the boys. In Class 2A private schools, Sarasota Christian, with 49 points, won its second straight All Sports title by again defeating Grandview Prep (Boca Raton) by nine points. And Cedar Key also took home its first-ever All Sports trophy in Class 1A with 48 points, besting second place Sneads and its champion girls program by just a single point.

For the 2014-15 school year, the 690 member senior high schools have been divided into eight classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2012, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting and a restructuring prior to the 2011-12 school year with the addition of the rural classification, Classes 2A, 3A and 4A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An All Sports award will be presented in each of these 10 categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2014-15 school year.

Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In all sports with team scores, points are awarded as follows: 20 for the state champion, 12 for the state runner-up, 9 for the state semifinalists, 6 for 5-8th places, and 3 for 9-16th places. Schools get a 2-point bonus for winning a district or regional championship, and points are deducted for unsporting conduct: 0.25 points for Level 1 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 0.5 for Level 2 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 1.0 for Level 3 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 2.5 for Level 4 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 1.0 for Level 1 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 1.5 for Level 2 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 2.0 for Level 3 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; and approximately 1.5-3.0 additional points deducted for a school or team-based violation (e.g., bench-clearing brawl, coach takes team off the field, etc.). In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
