Winter Park and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) sweep FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports awards

GAINESVILLE – Winter Park (8A) and St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale - 7A) swept the top overall, boys and girls awards in their respective classifications in the final 2013-14 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings. Barron Collier (Naples - 6A), American Heritage (Plantation - 5A), Bolles (Jacksonville - 4A Private), West Florida (Pensacola - 4A Public), Holy Trinity (Melbourne - 3A Private), FAMU (Tallahassee - 3A/2A Public), Sarasota Christian (2A Private), and Trenton (1A) also won the overall awards in their respective classifications.

In additon, there was a tie among the top two boys programs in Class 8A between Winter Park and South Dade (Homestead). But thanks to its runner-up finish in the FHSAA Class 4A Girls Cross Country Finals, Winter Park took the boys title in the second tiebreaker procedure (listed below).

Winter Park, with 168 points, relclaimed the title after having previously taken home first place in the 2011-12 school year. It was the top school in 8A this year with a 35-point margin over the second place finisher Cypress Bay (Weston). St. Thomas Aquinas totalled 251.5 points to earn the win in Class 7A over Oviedo, which finished with 135 points. Barron Collier, having won the award for the first time since the 2010-11 school year, topped Class 6A with 97 points, beating Creekside (St. Johns), which finished with 87 points. Barron Collier was not on top of either gender, though, as Belen Jesuit (Miami) won the boys division and Creekside won the girls division. American Heritage, with 170.25 points, has the highest score of any 5A school in 2013-14, defeating Ponte Vedra by 46.5 points. American Heritage's total was boosted by having the highest scoring girls program in 5A. Bolles, with 191.5 points, took home victory among the Class 4A private schools, finishing 27.75 points better than second-place Gulliver Prep (Pinecrest) and 34.5 points better than Lake Highland Prep (Orlando). Bolles also had the highest girls total in 4A private, edging Ransom Everglades (Miami) 118-110.

West Florida's improbable victory in its softball state championship game propelled the Jaguars to the top of the 4A public school category as a first-time champion, as well as the school making its first-ever top-10 appearance since the inception of the award in the 2002-03 school year. West Florida scored 71 points to best Florida High (Tallahassee) at 59.5 points, P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) at 57.25 points, and Washington (Miami) at 52 points. P.K. Yonge had the best-scoring girls program and Washington was first in the boys. Holy Trinity is a first-time winner among Class 3A private schools with 112 points, as First Academy (Orlando) finished a close second with 95 points. Holy Trinity's girls program was edged by Westminster Christian's (Miami) program, 57.75-57. FAMU, with 30.75 points, won its fifth All Sports trophy in the combined 3A/2A public school category, beating Moore Haven, which had 15.75 points. Moore Haven shocked FAMU in the girls category by one point, 16-15, after finishing as state runner-up at the Class 3A softball finals. In Class 2A private schools, Sarasota Christian, with 57 points, won its first All Sports title by defeating Grandview Prep (Boca Raton) by just four points. And Trenton also took home its first-ever All Sports trophy in Class 1A with 53.5 points, besting second place Chiefland, which had 48 points.

For the 2013-14 school year, the 684 member senior high schools have been divided into eight classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2012, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting and a restructuring prior to the 2011-12 school year with the addition of the rural classification, Classes 2A, 3A and 4A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An All Sports award will be presented in each of these 10 categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2013-14 school year.

Points are awarded to a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 16 places are scored. In all sports with team scores, points are awarded as follows: 20 for the state champion, 12 for the state runner-up, 9 for the state semifinalists, 6 for 5-8th places, and 3 for 9-16th places. Schools get a 2-point bonus for winning a district or regional championship, and points are deducted for unsporting conduct: 0.25 points for Level 1 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 0.5 for Level 2 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 1.0 for Level 3 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 2.5 for Level 4 student-athlete ejection/unsporting conduct incident; 1.0 for Level 1 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 1.5 for Level 2 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; 2.0 for Level 3 coach ejection/unsporting conduct incident, plus addition 0.5 points deducted for each $50 amount above initial fine; and approximately 1.5-3.0 additional points deducted for a school or team-based violation (e.g., bench-clearing brawl, coach takes team off the field, etc.). In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
