Berkeley Prep student-athlete named Florida Spirit of Sport winner

GAINESVILLE–Berkeley Preparatory School (Tampa) student-athlete Bryane Heaberlin was selected the Florida winner for the NFHS Spirit of Sport Award. The award honors individuals who exemplify the ideals of the positive spirit of sport that represent the core mission of education-based athletics.

Heaberlin, a Parade All-American soccer player, created the Many Hearts, One Goal Foundation to raise funds to help bring the Haitian under-17 women’s national team to the Disney Cup International Youth Tournament last July. Heaberlin’s compassionate act of hugging Haitian goalkeeper Alexandra Coby after an international contest in March 2010 earned national headlines.

"We’re very proud of her," said Berkeley Prep athletic director Bobby Reinhart. "She’s accomplished so much on the field and even more in the community.  She has been an inspiration to many people.'"

Heaberlin will be honored at the Academic All-State Awards banquet in June in Gainesville. The nomination has been forwarded to the NFHS for consideration for the national award. This is the third year Florida has offered the award.

The Florida High School Athletic Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletic competition in Florida. It has a membership of more than 770 middle and senior high schools.
