FHSAA launches "Become an Official" campaign

GAINESVILLE – In an effort to generate more interest in officiating high school sports, the Florida High School Athletic Association has launched a new officials recruitment campaign.

The "Become An Official" campaign began in the hopes of spurring the interest of Florida residents to get involved with the community, make some extra money, get physically fit, and provide a service to the education of student-athletes.

"Officiating is an exciting way for persons wanting to take part on the field of action," said Executive Director John A. Stewart.

The web site, www.becomeanofficial.org, has all the tools necessary for anyone 18 and older to become involved in 12 sports, ranging from football to track & field. The site features a message from Sarasota resident Dick Vitale, urging people to "get back in the game."

With the growing numbers of high schools and student-athletes in Florida, the number of contest officials has not kept up with the demand for their services.

"We hope people will take advantage of this opportunity to help young people and the school systems," Stewart said.
