Board selects Zornes president-elect

GAINESVILLE – The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors voted at its June business meeting today to select Greg Zornes, athletic director of Largo High School, as president-elect. Zornes will assume the board presidency in the 2009-10 school year. He will follow current President-Elect Danny Sims, superintendent of Jackson County Schools. Sims will succeed outgoing President Richard Finlayson on July 1.

"I'm honored to be selected by the board," Zornes said. "I am happy to serve an organization that represents the best interests of the student-athletes in Florida."

In other action, the Board of Directors:

• Changed the Officials Advisory Committee meetings to meet annually instead of biannually, and to allow one member of the OAC to attend the respective sport committee meeting in an ex-officio capacity.

• Modified the Policy Governing Approval of Multi-School Athletic Events to include a $50 administrative fee assessed to FHSAA member schools participating in out-of-state events that require FHSAA sanctioning; to increase the number of teams and/or schools that may be represented in a tournament, without waiving any other policies for the benefit of participation; and listing the minimum penalties for violation of the sanction policy.

• Restructured the Athletic Directors Advisory Committee to include additional representatives from the FIAAA as members, increasing the number of representatives on the committee to a total of 15; modify the term limitations; establish meeting dates, and clarify the election process.

• Approved a recommendation of the Officials Advisory Committee to allow baseball officials to wear different colored shirts as long as they all wear the same color and style and display the FHSAA patch appopriately.

• Approved a recommendation of the Officials Advisory Committee to require local football officials associations to purchase and train with the current year's version of the CCA seven-man mechanics, and to include any PowerPoint presentations available for free to local associations.

• Approved a recommendation of the Officials Advisory Committee to increase the FHSAA Finals soccer officiating crews from three officials to four officials, with a $35 game fee to be paid to the fourth official.

• Endorsed the concept of creating an ad-hoc committee to research the establishment of a dual-team wrestling tournament.

• Approved preliminary budgets for the 2008-09 school year for the FHSAA and the FHSAA Land Corporation.

• Appointed the following attorneys to the Section Appeals committees: Section 1, Mr. J. Patrick Floyd; Section 2, Mr. James Collins; Section 3, Mr. Scott Langston. Section 4 is TBA.

• Appointed the following at-large members to the Section Appeals committees: Section 1, TBA; Section 2, Mr. Lamarr Glenn, athletic director, Wekiva HS (Apopka); Section 3, Ms. Christina Raburn, athletic director, Durant HS (Plant City); Section 4, Pastor Jimmy Butler, principal, Upperroom Christian Academy (Lauderhill).

• Elected Chuck Sennett, athletic director of Miami Country Day School, to the Section 4 Appeals Committee to break the tie that resulted after the run-off election.

• Ratified the appointment of the following FAANS-recommended private school members to the Section Appeals committees: Section 1, Mr. Dan Worley, principal, Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville); Section 2, Mr. Greg Frescoln, administrator, The First Academy (Leesburg); Section 3, Captain Robert Fine, headmaster, Admiral Farragut Academy (St. Petersburg); Section 4, Mr. Chris McKeon, athletic director, Columbus HS (Miami).

• Clarified the definition of an approved nonmember school to state "an approved nonmember school can be a private school registered with the State of Florida Department of Education. A private school is defined as an institution not governed by a public school board, receives no federal monies, derives profit from tuition fees, and is not administered by local, state or national government."

• Denied a staff recommendation to reduce the maximum number of regular season contests allowed.

• Discussed possible classification changes in Classes 1A, 2A and 3A to an urban and rural system.

• Heard a presentation on the STAR Sportsmanship behavior skills online education program.

About the FHSAA
The Florida High School Athletic Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida.  It has a membership of more than 750 middle and senior high schools, and sponsors postseason competitions to determine the official state high school champions in 30 different sports. The 16-member FHSAA Board of Directors is the executive authority of the Association.
