Apopka's Wambles, Seacrest Country Day's Marsala win elections to FHSAA Board of Directors

GAINESVILLE – Russell Wambles, athletic director at Apopka High School, and Mark Marsala, athletic director at Seacrest Country Day School in Naples, both won run-off elections to claim seats on the FHSAA Board of Directors.

Wambles defeated Dick Toth, athletic director at Mainland High School in Daytona, by a vote of 31-11 to win the Section 2 public school seat on the Board of Directors. Marsala, meanwhile, defeated Chris McKeon, assistant principal and athletic director at Columbus High School in Miami, by a vote of 34-28 to claim the Section 4 private school board seat.

In other run-off elections:

• Doug Patterson, athletic director at Boone High School in Orlando, won the available public school seat on the Section 2 Appeals Committee. Patterson, who received 16 votes, defeated Nease High School (Ponte Vedra Beach) principal Linda Thomson, who received 12 votes, and Mount Dora High School athletic director John Hallowell, who received 11 votes.

• A run-off between Miami Country Day School athletic director Chuck Sennett and Wellington Christian School athletic director Matthew Winters for the private school seat on the Section 4 Appeals Committee ended in a 12-12 tie. The Board of Directors will break the tie at its June 12-13 meeting in Jacksonville Beach.

The Florida High School Athletic Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida.  It has a membership of more than 700 middle and senior high schools, and sponsors postseason competitions to determine the official state high school champions in 30 different sports.
