Doral Academy penalized for violations in its football program

GAINESVILLE – Doral Academy of Miami has been penalized by the FHSAA for violations in its football program.

The investigation centered around the eligibility of three student-athletes who transferred from Coral Reef High School to Doral Academy within a year of three football coaches leaving Coral Reef to coach at Doral. FHSAA Bylaw 11.4.13 states: "A student who transfers to a new school within one calendar year of the relocation of his or her coach to that school without a corresponding change in residence shall be considered to have transferred for athletic reasons and shall not be eligible to participate in the sport(s) coached by that coach for one calendar year from the date of enrollment in the new school." One of the student-athletes also was declared ineligible to participate in any sport at Doral, because he was ineligible to participate at Coral Reef for reasons that cannot be disclosed.

The following penalties were imposed in this case:

1. Reprimand.

2. The school must forfeit any contests in which the three student-athletes participated.

3. Doral Academy's football program is placed on restrictive probation beginning immediately and concluding at the end of the 2008-09 school year. For the two-year period, the following restrictions are imposed:
   • The school cannot participate in 2008-09 FHSAA State Football Series competition; and
   • The school cannot participate in a fall or spring jamboree or classic contest.

4. The school is fined $5,000.

FHSAA bylaws ensure the school's right to appeal the Commissioner's findings, as well as the penalties assessed. The school has 10 business days to notify in writing the FHSAA Office if it intends to file an appeal.
