First Academy, Seffner Christian tops in spring Inaugural FHSAA Academic Team Champion honorees
GAINESVILLE – First Academy (Orlando) baseball and Seffner Christian softball topped out as overall winners in the Inaugural FHSAA Academic Team Champion awards program.
The FHSAA Academic Team Champion awards program honors teamwork not only in competition, but in the classroom as well, recognizing teams in each of the Association's eight sanctioned team sports – baseball, boys and girls basketball, football, boys and girls winter soccer, softball and girls volleyball – naming an Academic Team Champion in each classification, as well as one overall winner in each sport. Two overall winners are awarded in football – one for the four larger classifications (6A, 5A, 4A, 3A) and one for the four smaller classifications (2A, 2B, 1A, 1B) – to compensate for the discrepancy in squad sizes.
To be eligible for nomination, a team must have committed to participate in FHSAA state series competition in its nominating sport and honored that commitment by participating in the district tournament (or all scheduled district games in football only). The team must have at least a 3.0 cumulative team grade point average on an unweighted 4.0 scale.
Each classification winner will receive a commemorative state championship trophy. In addition to the trophy, each overall winner receives a $3,000 award.
Here are the honorees in spring sports:
Baseball
Class 6A – Spruce Creek (Port Orange), 3.516 cumulative team GPA.
Class 5A – Bloomingdale (Valrico), 3.438 cumulative team GPA.
Class 4A – Gulf Breeze, 3.465 cumulative team GPA.
Class 3A – Pine Crest (Fort Lauderdale), 3.351 cumulative team GPA.
Class 2A / Overall Winner – First Academy (Orlando), 3.535 cumulative team GPA.
Class 1A – St. Francis (Gainesville), 3.467 cumulative team GPA.
Softball
Class 6A – Osceola (Kissimmee), 3.526 cumulative team GPA.
Class 5A – Palm Harbor University, 3.615 cumulative team GPA.
Class 4A – Suncoast (Riviera Beach), 3.606 cumulative team GPA.
Class 3A – Westminster Academy (Fort Lauderdale), 3.688 cumulative team GPA.
Class 2A – First Academy (Orlando), 3.692 cumulative team GPA.
Class 1A / Overall Winner – Seffner Christian, 3.788 cumulative team GPA.
