Track & field finals return to Winter Park; sites of other spring sports finals announced
GAINESVILLE The FHSAA Track & Field Finals state championship meets will return to Showalter Field in Winter Park for the next three years, the FHSAA Office officially announced today. Winter Park High School will be the host organization for the event.
Also announced were the sites of state finals in boys volleyball, girls & boys water polo and boys weightlifting.
The track & field finals were held at Showalter Field from 1971 through 1992. The 2006 Class 3A and Class 4A meets were moved to Showalter Field when Winter Park High School offered to host after Coral Springs HIgh School notified the FHSAA Office that it would be unable to do so because of hurricane damage to its stadium. That renewed talks between the FHSAA and Winter Park about returning the state meets in all four classifications to their long-time home. The agreement reached guarantees Winter Park High School the rights to host the 2007, 2008 and 2009 state meets at Showalter Field.
"We are excited about the FHSAA Track & Field Finals returning to Showalter Field," FHSAA Commissioner John A. Stewart said. "The FHSAA staff looks forward to working with the Winter Park High School administration in making the FHSAA Track & Field Finals a memorable experience for participants and spectators alike."
The dates for the upcoming 2007 event are Class 1A, Friday, April 27; Class 2A, Saturday, April 28; Class 3A, Friday, May 4 and Class 4A, Saturday, May 5.
