Cardinal Gibbons jumps to Class 4A lead, Lake Highland Prep overtakes Bolles in 3A private Dodge Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings

GAINESVILLE – Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale) scored 112.5 points while Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) added 127 points in winter sports competition to take the lead in their respective categories in the 2006-07 Dodge Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings.

Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Port St. Joe, Tampa Prep, FAMU (Tallahassee) and Pine Castle Christian (Orlando) also are atop of their respective classifications.

Winter Park, with 323.5 points, is on top of Class 6A ahead of second place Boone (Orlando), who finished with 277.2 points. St. Thomas Aquinas is in command of Class 5A with 419 points, 116.5 points ahead of Leon (Tallahassee), which finished the fall with 302.5 points. Cardinal Gibbons is now tops in Class 4A with 296.5 points, while second-place Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville) totalled 275 points. P.K. Yonge is setting the standard for the 3A public schools with 247.5 points, besting second place Florida High (Tallahassee) by 30.5 points. Lake Highland Prep edged Bolles 356-355 to jump into the lead in the Class 3A private schools category, while third place American Heritage (Plantation) remains in contention with 349 points. Port St. Joe is out in front in the 2A public school category with 123.5 points, a 20.5-point advantage over second place Blountstown, who finished with 103 points. Tampa Prep, with 256.5 points, sports a scant 0.5-point lead in Class 2A private schools over Maclay (Tallahassee). FAMU remains in the lead in the Class 1A public school category with 83.5 points, 11.5 points ahead of Malone. Finally, Pine Castle Christian, with 174 points, moved past Sarasota Christian to lead the Class 1A private schools by a 5-point margin.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards are presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.

The 650 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2004, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored in their communities by local Dodge dealers during the 2007-08 school year.
