Calusa Prep forfeits berth in Class 1A boys basketball playoffs

GAINESVILLE – Calusa Preparatory School of Miami has forfeited its berth in the 2007 FHSAA Region 1A-4 Boys Basketball Tournament for permitting an ineligible student-athlete to participate as a member of its boys basketball team.

The student-athlete, who enrolled at Calusa Prep in January after transferring from a school in California, was not eligible to represent his former school at the time of transfer.

FHSAA Bylaw 11.4.11 states that a student who transfers to an FHSAA member school from a school in another state or country who has been declared ineligible to participate in interscholastic athletics by that school or by the governing association of which that school is a member is not eligible to represent the FHSAA member school until he has been enrolled for a full semester.

Calusa Prep must forfeit all games won in which the ineligible student-athlete participated. This includes the District 1A-16 Championship, which the school won last week.

Calvary Christian Academy of Fort Lauderdale, which was scheduled to play at Calusa Prep tonight in the quarterfinals of the Region 1A-4 Tournament, will receive a bye into next Tuesday's regional tournament semifinal round.
