Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, P.K. Yonge, Bolles, Blountstown continue to dominate Dodge Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings
GAINESVILLE Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Bolles (Jacksonville) and Blountstown continue to dominate their respective categories following fall sports competition in the 2006-07 Dodge Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards Point Standings. Maclay (Tallahassee), FAMU (Tallahassee) and Warner Christian (South Daytona) also are atop of their respective classifications.
Winter Park, with 235.0 points, is on top of Class 6A with a 24-point advantage over second place Boone (Orlando). St. Thomas Aquinas is in command of Class 5A with 286 points, 29 points ahead of Leon (Tallahassee), which finished the fall with 257 points. Bishop Kenny is in the lead in Class 4A with 221 points, while second-place Nease (Ponte Vedra Beach) totalled 194.5 points. P.K. Yonge is setting the standard for the 3A public schools with 106 points, besting second place Chipley by 46 points. Bolles, with 301 points, leads the Class 3A private schools by a 72-point margin over Lake Highland Prep (Orlando), which has 229 points. Blountstown is out in front in the 2A public school category with 86 points, an 24-point lead over second place Liberty County (Bristol), who finished with 62 points. Maclay (Tallahassee), with 197.5 points, sports a 44.5-point lead in Class 2A private schools over King's Academy (West Palm Beach). FAMU (Tallahassee) earned the lead in the Class 1A public school category with 50 points, 13 points ahead of rival Graceville. Finally, Warner Christian (South Daytona), with 106 points, finished the fall with a scant 6-point margin over Bradenton Prep to lead the Class 1A private schools.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards are presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.
The 650 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2004, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2006-07 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored in their communities by local Dodge dealers during the 2007-08 school year.
