FHSAA releases state football series assignments for 2007, 2008 seasons
GAINESVILLE The Florida High School Athletic Association office today released the revised assignments for the 2007 and 2008 FHSAA State Football Series.
The FHSAA currently is at the mid-point of an experimental four-year classification term. Previous classification terms have been two years in length. Schools were originally classified for the four-year term on the basis of their student populations as reported in Fall 2004. The guidelines for the experimental four-year term require the FHSAA Office to revise the assignments between the first two-year scheduling cycle and the second two-year scheduling cycle of the term to reassign schools that have experienced 20-percent or greater increases or decreases in student populations between the Fall 2004 and Fall 2006 reports. Adjustments also are made to add schools requesting assignment to a district for the first time during the term, or to remove schools withdrawing from their commitment to participate in the state series, discontinuing their programs or closing.
Because of these adjustments, a number of other schools have been reassigned from one district to another within the same classification to balance the number of schools within the districts. In some cases, districts have been combined or dissolved and their members reassigned to other districts.
"The jury is still out as to whether the four-year classification term will be deemed a success or failure," said Jack Watford, FHSAA Director of Communications. "It has been successful in other states, but the growth in membership and the population fluctuations within the schools in our Association makes it a little more difficult to manage here. We will be interested to hear what the member schools have to say about it before we begin making plans for the next classificaiton term in Fall 2008."
A total of 492 high schools have committed to participate in the 2007 and 2008 state football series.
The revisions are summarized below. The complete 2007 and 2008 state football series assignments listing is available on FHSAA.org, the Association's official web site, at the following address:
