Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Gulliver Prep, P.K. Yonge sweep Dodge Sunshine Cup all-sports awards
GAINESVILLE Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Gulliver Prep (Miami), and P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) swept the top overall, boys and girls awards in their respective classifications in the final 2005-06 Dodge Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards point standings. Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), Port St. Joe, Oak Hall (Gainesville), Paxton and Sarasota Christian also won the overall awards in their respective classifications.
Winter Park, with 569.5 points, claimed a 167.5-point lead over second-place Riverview (Sarasota) in Class 6A. St. Thomas Aquinas took Class 5A with 613 points, while runner-up Barron Collier (Naples) earned 355.5 points. Bishop Kenny won the Class 4A honors with 457 points, 51.5 points ahead of Bishop Moore (Orlando). P.K. Yonge dominated the 3A public schools with 331 points, besting second place Florida High (Tallahassee) by 76 points. Gulliver Prep, with 611.5 points, outdistanced Bolles (Jacksonville) by 40 points in the Class 3A private school division. Port St. Joe won the Class 2A public school category with 145 points, 9.5 points ahead of second-place Blountstown. Oak Hall set the standard for the Class 2A public school category with 347 points, a 4.5-point lead over second-place Maclay (Tallahassee). Paxton led the Class 1A public school category with 101 points, ahead of second-place FAMU (Tallahassee) by a scant 5-point margin. Finally, Sarasota Christian, with 171.5 points, held off Bradenton Prep by a mere 16 points in the Class 1A private school category.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards are presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.
The 636 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2004, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2005-06 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored at school events in the fall at dates and times to be announced.
