Blountstown's Summers wins election to FHSAA Board of Directors; 7 races to be decided with runoffs

GAINESVILLE – Blountstown High School Principal Keith Summers has won election to the FHSAA Board of Directors, the FHSAA Office announced today.

Summers, currently a member of the Section 1 Appeals Committee, will replace Fleming Island Principal Sam Ward as the Section 1 public school representative. Ward was ineligible for re-election. Summers secured the necessary majority of votes cast by one. He had 34 votes to the 17 cast for Rodney Nobles of Laurel Hill and the 16 cast for John Gwynes of Ed White (Jacksonville).

A total of 254 of the 724 member school representatives, or 35 percent of the membership, voted in the electronic balloting.

Six races for seats on the Representative Assembly were also decided in the general election. Paul Dyal of Taylor County Middle (Perry) won the Divisions 1-8 middle school seat; Craig Clements of DeLand won the Division 11 public school seat; Michael Wood of Bayonet Point Middle (New Port Richey) won the Division 13 middle school seat; Russell Wambles of Apopka won the Division 15 public school seat; Joe Kemper of Barron Collier (Naples) won the Division 25 public school seat and Stephanie Tudor of MAST Academy (Miami) won the Division 31 public school seat.

The races for seats on the Board of Directors will be decided by run-off elections. In Section 2, incumbent Jeff Malloy of Oak Hall (Gainesville) will face Mike Malatesta of Bishop Moore (Orlando) for the private school representative seat. In Section 3, incumbent Bob Cotter of Clearwater Central Catholic will face Jim O'Malley of Florida Air Academy (Melbourne) for the private school representative seat. In Section 4, Ernie Modugno of Naples will face George Phelan of Miami Sunset for the public school representative seat currently held by Dianne Sanzari of Coral Springs, who was not successful in her bid for reelection.

Other races that will be settled by run-off elections are the Section 1 Appeals Committee public school seat between Randy Ward of Marianna Middle and Paul Lambert of Chiles (Tallahassee); the Section 2 Appeals Committee public school seat between John Boston of West Orange (Winter Garden) and Craig Clements of DeLand; the Section 4 Appeals Committee public school seat between Eric Lape of Braddock (Miami) and Mark Marsala of South Fort Myers; and the Representative Assembly Divisions 29-30 private school seat between Chuck Sennett of Miami Country Day and Joe Zaccheo of Monsignor Pace (Miami).

Run-off elections will begin during the week of Monday, April 17, and will continue for 10 days. Candidates receiving the majority of votes cast in a race will be declared the winner. The Board of Directors will break any ties at its June 2 meeting in Jacksonville Beach.

The terms of office for those individuals winning elections will be July 1.
