3A-4A track & field finals relocate to Winter Park

GAINESVILLE – The 2006 FHSAA Track & Field Finals state championship meets in the 3A and 4A school classifications are being moved from Coral Springs High School to Winter Park's Showalter Field, the FHSAA Office announced today.

The move is necessary because of damage to Coral Springs High School's stadium lighting caused by Hurricane Wilma that will not repaired in time for the May 5-6 event. The Class 1A and Class 2A finals, scheduled for April 28-29 at Wolfson High School in Jacksonville, are not affected by this move.

"Coral Springs High School and Broward County Athletic Association officials were deeply saddened to give up this year's track & field finals," FHSAA Commissioner John A. Stewart said. "But they just simply did not believe they could ensure a first-class experience for the participants and spectators if they were to attempt to host the event under the current conditions."

Stewart expressed gratitude toward Winter Park High School for stepping forward to host the event.

"Winter Park High School and the Winter Park community has a long history of hosting outstanding track & field events at Showalter Field," Stewart said. "We thank them for agreeing to host this year's event on such short notice and look forward to renewing our relationship with them."

Showalter Field was the site of the FHSAA Track & Field Finals in all classifications from 1971 through 1992.
