Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, P.K. Yonge, Bolles, Blountstown, Tampa Prep, Graceville, Bradenton Academy lead Dodge Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings
GAINESVILLE Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Bolles (Jacksonville), Blountstown, Tampa Prep, Graceville and Bradenton Academy lead their respective categories following fall sports competition in the 2005-06 Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.
Winter Park, with 229.0 points, is on top of Class 6A with a 36.5-point advantage over second place Riverview (Sarasota). St. Thomas Aquinas is in command of Class 5A with 263 points, 21.5 points ahead of Chiles (Tallahassee), which finished the fall with 241.5 points. Bishop Kenny is in the lead in Class 4A with 249.5 points, while second-place Lincoln Park (Fort Pierce) sports 185.5 points. P.K. Yonge is setting the standard for the 3A public schools with 115 points, besting second place South Walton (Santa Rosa Beach) by 39 points. Bolles, with 279 points, leads the Class 3A private schools by a 51.5-point margin over Episcopal (Jacksonville), which has 227.5 points. Blountstown is out in front in the 2A public school category with 68 points, an 18-point lead over second place Cottondale and Port St. Joe, who are tied with 50 points. Tampa Prep, with 154.5 points, sports a scant 1.5-point lead in Class 2A private schools over Maclay (Tallahassee). Graceville earned the lead in the Class 1A public school category with 47 points, 10 points ahead of rival FAMU (Tallahassee). Finally, Bradenton Academy, with 97 points, slid past Saddlebrook Prep (Wesley Chapel) by 11 points to lead the Class 1A private schools.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.
The 636 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2004, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2005-06 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored in their communities by local Dodge dealers during the 2006-07 school year.
