Board endorses amendment to 50-percent rule

GAINESVILLE – The Florida High School Athletic Association Board of Directors today endorsed an amendment to Bylaw 9.8.1, proposing to delete the "50-percent" provision relative to off-season interaction between coaches and student-athletes.

"This amendment puts the bylaw in alignment with the open facility and off-season participation policies passed by the Board at the September meeting," said Associate Commissioner Bill Grey. "The policies will help to monitor off-season interaction between coaches and their student-athletes."

The bylaw amendment will be voted on by the Representative Assembly at its January 23-24, 2006 meeting.

Approved the following appointments to fill vacant seats on the 2006 Representative Assembly:
• Section 1, Division 6 Public, Melinda Moses, athletic director, Columbia (Lake City);
• Section 1, Divisions 3-4 Private, Bruce Irvin, Maclay (Tallahassee);
• Section 1, Divisions 5-6 Private, no eligible candidates;
• Section 1, Divisions 7-8 Private, Bob West, athletic director, Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville);
• Section 2, Division 9 Public, Charlotte Lord, principal, Dixie County (Cross City);
• Section 2, Division 10 Public, John Jacobs, athletic director, Dunnellon;

In other action, the Board of Directors:

• Reviewed bylaw proposals submitted for consideration of the 2006 Representative Assembly.
• Heard a first reading of the proposed "Policy on Diversity in Leadership."
• Approved the relocation of Internet services to the FHSAA Office.

About the FHSAA
The Florida High School Athletic Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletic competition in Florida. It has a membership of more than 700 middle, junior and senior high schools.

The FHSAA Board of Directors is the executive authority of the Association, establishing guidelines, regulations, policies and procedures within the framework of the Association’s bylaws. The Board of Directors also has the sole authority over all terms and conditions of participation and competition in the FHSAA state championship series. The Board of Directors meets five times annually. Its next meeting is Jan. 29-30, 2006 at the Robert W. Hughes FHSAA Building in Gainesville.
