Golf finals pushed back yet another week; plans for other fall sports haven't changed
GAINESVILLE The 2005 FHSAA Golf Finals state championship tournament, originally rescheduled to Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 1-2, has been postponed again, the FHSAA Office announced today.
The tournament now is tentatively rescheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 8-9, with the optional practice round and coaches meeting set for Monday, Nov. 7. The tournament will remain in the Treasure Coast area, but the courses most likely will change. Efforts currently are underway to relocate the event to courses in Indian River and northern St. Lucie counties. New hotel information for participating schools will be announced Monday, Oct. 31, on FHSAA.org.
"It is highly unlikely that schools in areas hit hardest by Hurricane Wilma will reopen by Monday," said Commissioner John A. Stewart. "They have no power, in some cases no water, and limited communications. Schools in those areas whose teams or individual competitors have qualified for the golf finals would find it difficult, if not impossible, to organize their teams, arrange transportation and get out of the disaster areas in time for the tournament. It simply would be expecting too much of those student-athletes to show up ready to play championship-caliber golf on Tuesday."
Stewart continued: "We will wait another week to hold the golf finals, and another week after that if it is necessary. What we won't do is leave those student-athletes behind and play the tournament without them."
