FHSAA postpones golf finals
Tournament joins fall soccer as second to be rescheduled due to procrastinating Wilma

GAINESVILLE – Acknowledging there is no reason to wait until the 5 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 22, advisory on the path of Hurricane Wilma, the Florida High School Athletic Association office today announced that the 2005 FHSAA Golf Finals state tournament scheduled for next Tuesday and Wednesday, Oct. 25-26, in Fort Pierce, Port St. Lucie, Stuart and Vero Beach has been postponed.

The golf finals now will be played Tuesday and Wednesday, Nov. 1-2, at the same locations along the state's Treasure Coast. The optional practice round and pretournament coaches meeting will be held Monday, Oct. 31.

"There is still a lot of uncertainty as to Wilma's intentions," Commissioner John A. Stewart said. "The only thing just about everyone agrees on is that the storm will hit some part of Florida at some place and time in the next week. Accordingly, we are proceeding with Option 2 of our contingency plan and postponing the golf finals until the following week."

The FHSAA Golf Finals is the second state finals event to be postponed because of Wilma. The FHSAA announced Thursday that the 2005 FHSAA Fall Soccer Finals scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Oct. 28-29, has been rescheduled for Friday and Saturday, Nov. 4-5. The eight first-round play-in games scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25 have been postponed until Friday, Oct. 28.

The FHSAA office also announced contingency plans for regional girls volleyball tournament quarterfinal matches scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 25. If either participating school in a given match is closed due to the storm on Monday, that match will be postponed until Wednesday, Oct. 26. If either participating school in a given match is closed due to the storm on Tuesday, then the match will be postponed until Thursday, Oct. 27.

"We will continue to monitor the progress of the storm and make any necessary decisions relative to the other fall sports playoffs as they become necessary," Stewart said. "I encourage everyone to monitor FHSAA.org for the latest information."
