Lake Mary, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, Lincoln Park, Bolles, P.K. Yonge, Maclay, Sarasota Christian lead Dodge Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings
GAINESVILLE Lake Mary, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), Lincoln Park (Fort Pierce), Bolles (Jacksonville), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Maclay (Tallahassee) and Sarasota Christian lead their respective categories following fall sports competition in the 2003-04 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.
Lake Mary, with 216.5 points, is on top of Class 6A with a scant half-point advantage over second place Winter Park. St. Thomas Aquinas is in command of Class 5A with 308 points, 137 points ahead of Fort Myers, which finished the fall with 171 points. Bishop Kenny is in the lead in Class 4A with 202.3 points, while second-place Nease (Ponte Vedra Beach) sports 181.5 points. Lincoln Park is setting the standard for the 3A public schools with 165.0 points, besting second place Hernando (Brooksville) by 74 points. Bolles, with 311 points, leads the Class 3A private schools by a 91-point margin over Episcopal (Jacksonville), which has 220 points. P.K. Yonge is well out in front in the 2A public school category with 150 points, a 89.5-point lead over second place Blountstown, which has 55.5 points. Maclay, with 200 points, sports a 42-point lead in Class 2A private schools over Tampa Prep. Altha and Central (Milton) finished the fall tied with 8.5 points apiece to share the lead in the Class 1A public school category. Finally, Sarasota Christian, with 91 points, edged out Lake Worth Christian (Boynton Beach) by one point to lead the Class 1A private schools.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.
The 620 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2002, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2003-04 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Awards Luncheon on June 16 at the Wyndham Westshore Hotel in Tampa.
