Pinellas district administrator set to be new associate commissioner

GAINESVILLE – William R. Grey, Director of School Operations for Pinellas County Schools, today was announced as the FHSAA's new Associate Commissioner of Compliance, Administrative Operations and Legal Affairs. He succeeds Dr. W. Daniel Boyd Jr., who left the FHSAA staff on July 1 to become superintendent of schools in Alachua County.

Grey began his career in Florida as a teacher and coach at Seminole High School in 1970. He was named Pinellas County Track Coach of the Year in both 1972 and 1973. From 1979 through 1983 Grey served as assistant principal at Northeast High School in St. Petersburg. He was appointed as principal of St. Petersburg High School in 1983, where he was instrumental starting the county's first International Baccalaureate Program.

As Director of School Operations for the district, a position he has held since 1993, Grey has overseen issues involving safety, human resource management and operational concerns for 45 schools; has served as a liaison between principals and the school board attorney's office on legal matters pertaining to student discipline, interpretations of policy and expulsion procedures; and has ensured compliance with federal, state and county regulations by all schools.

"I am pleased to announce the hiring of William Grey as the FHSAA's new Associate Commissioner of Compliance, Administrative Operations and Legal Affairs," said Commissioner Robert W. Hughes. "His education and experience are very impressive. He will be a tremendous asset to our Association."

Grey holds a B.S. degree in history and political science from Sterling College (Kan.) and an M.Ed. degree in school administration from the University of Mississippi. He will assume his position with the FHSAA staff in early August.
