St. Thomas Aquinas, P.K. Yonge, Trinity Prep sweep Dodge Sunshine Cup all-sports awards

GAINESVILLE – St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville) and Trinity Prep (Winter Park) swept the top overall, boys and girls awards in their respective classifications in the final 2003-04 Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards point standings. Winter Park, Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), Hernando (Brooksville), Bolles (Jacksonville), Altha and Orangewood Christian (Maitland) also claimed the top overall spot in their respective classifications.

Winter Park, with 380 points, was tops in Class 6A with a 21-point advantage over second place Buchholz (Gainesville). St. Thomas Aquinas conquered Class 5A with 701.5 points, more than double that of second place Seminole, which finished with 344.5 points. Bishop Kenny took Class 4A with 384 points, as runner-up Gainesville totaled 342.8 points. Hernando climbed to the top of Class 3A public schools, scoring 141.5 points in the spring to finish with 299.5 – 21 points better than second place Clay (Green Cove Springs). Bolles, with 572 points, outdistanced runner-up Gulliver Prep (Miami) by 44 points. P.K. Yonge dominated the 2A public school category with 386.2 points, more than double that of second place Fort Meade, which finished with 145 points. Trinity Prep, with 479.4 points, led the way in Class 2A private schools over American Heritage (Delray Beach), which finished with 325.5 points. Altha, with 102.5 points, nabbed the Class 1A public schools crown, as second place FAMU (Tallahassee) ended the year with 86 points. Finally, in the Class 1A private school category, Orangewood Christian finished with 209.5 points – 29.5 points better than second place Saddlebrook Prep (Wesley Chapel), which ended the year with180 points.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.

The 609 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2002, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2003-04 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored at the Inaugural FHSAA Awards Luncheon on June 10 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
