Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, Cocoa Beach, Bolles, P.K. Yonge, Trinity Prep, FAMU, Orangewood Christian lead Dodge Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings
GAINESVILLE Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), Cocoa Beach, Bolles (Jacksonville), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Trinity Prep (Winter Park), FAMU (Tallahassee) and Orangewood Christian (Maitland) lead their respective categories following winter sports competition in the 2003-04 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.
Winter Park, with 289 points, tops Class 6A with a 32.5-point advantage over second place Buchholz (Gainesville). St. Thomas Aquinas has a commanding lead in Class 5A with 429.5 points, 132.8 points ahead of Fort Myers, which finished the winter with 296.7 points. Bishop Kenny is in the lead in Class 4A with 272.5 points, 15.5 points better than second place Nease (Ponte Vedra Beach), which has 257 points. Cocoa Beach is setting the standard for the 3A public schools with 171 points, a scant half-point margin over Lincoln Park (Fort Pierce)s 170.5 points. Bolles, with 363 points, leads the Class 3A private schools by 24 points over Gulliver Prep (Miami), which has 339 points. P.K. Yonge is well out in front in the 2A public school category with 249 points, a 156-point lead over second-place Baker, which has 93 points. Trinity Prep, with 315 points, sports a 40.5-point lead in Class 2A private schools over Berkeley Prep (Tampa) with 274.5 points. FAMU, with 75 points, leads the Class 1A public schools over second-place Malone, which has 62 points. Finally, in the Class 1A private school category, Orangewood Christian (Maitland) finished the winter with 142.5 points 19 points better than second-place Bradenton Christian, which has 123.5 points.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.
The 606 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2002, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2003-04 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 10 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
