Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bishop Kenny, Cocoa Beach, Bolles, P.K. Yonge, Trinity Prep, Altha, Saddlebrook Prep lead Dodge Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings

GAINESVILLE – Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), Cocoa Beach, Bolles (Jacksonville), P.K. Yonge (Gainesville), Trinity Prep (Winter Park), Altha and Saddlebrook Prep (Wesley Chapel) lead their respective categories following fall sports competition in the 2003-04 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.

Winter Park, with 246 points, tops Class 6A with a 15-point advantage over second place Buchholz (Gainesville). St. Thomas Aquinas leads Class 5A with 279 points, 68 points ahead of Fort Myers, which finished the fall with 211 points. Bishop Kenny is in the lead in Class 4A with 210.5 points, 22 points better than second place Nease (Ponte Vedra Beach), which has 188.5 points. Cocoa Beach is setting the standard for the 3A public schools with 112.5 points, while second place Mount Dora earned 86 points. Bolles, with 256 points, leads the Class 3A private schools by a 33-point margin over Pope John Paul II (Boca Raton), which has 223 points. P.K. Yonge is well out in front in the 2A public school category with 162 points, a 112-point lead over second place Freeport, which has 50 points. Trinity Prep, with 218 points, sports a 29-point lead in Class 2A private schools over Oak Hall (Gainesville) with 189 points. Altha, with 25 points, leads the Class 1A public schools over second place Laurel Hill, which has 8.5 points. Finally, in the Class 1A private school category, Saddlebrook Prep finished the fall with 92 points – 12 points better than second place Glades Day (Belle Glade), which has 80 points.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Athletic Association.

The 606 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2002, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. In accordance with a Board mandate at its November 2002 meeting, Classes 1A, 2A and 3A are further subdivided into public and private categories. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these nine categories in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2003-04 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 10 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
