Green, Kircher named 2003 FHSAA Scholar-Athletes of the Year
GAINESVILLE Revae Green of Tavares High School and Adam Kircher of Maclay School (Tallahassee) were named the 2003 FHSAA Female and Male Scholar-Athletes of the Year at the Ninth Annual Florida High School Activities Association Academic All-State Awards Banquet held June 13 at the Wyndham Westshore Hotel in Tampa.
The two students among the 23 chosen to the 2003 FHSAA Academic All-State Team received a $2500 scholarship and commemorative trophy in addition to the $500 award and medallion for being selected to the team. The Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award is generally regarded as the most prestigious award the Association confers upon a student-athlete.
Green finished her high school career with a 3.92 cumulative unweighted grade point average. She earned varsity letters in volleyball, basketball and track & field her junior and senior years. Green will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, studying biology.
In addition to being a three-sport athlete, Green served as Student Government Association secretary for Tavares, was president of its chapter of the National Honor Society, and was president of her sophomore class. She was the Bulldogs' Most Valuable Athlete in track & field her junior year, and set school records in the 4x400-meter relay, 300-meter hurdles and high jump. Green also won the district and regional titles in the high jump in 2002. She was named the Most Outstanding Player on the basketball team on a senior. In addition to her interscholastic athletic achievements, she has volunteered more than 200 hours of her time with organizations like Adopt-A-Road, Special Olympics and United Way.
Kircher finished his high school career as valedictorian of his 97-member senior class. He earned varsity letters in soccer, weightlifting and track & field his junior and senior years, as well as swimming & diving his junior year. Kircher will study economics and engineering at Stanford University in Stanford, Calif.
Kircher, a National Merit Scholar award winner and Coca-Cola National Scholar, scored 1580 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). He was a member of the state championship 4x800-meter relay team at the 2000, 2002 and 2003 FHSAA Florida Track & Field Finals, and was captain of the soccer team. He also lettered in crew his sophomore year and received the H.E.A.D. award as the MVP.
Kircher was an involved student leader at Maclay, paving new roads to suit his interests. He founded the school's ultimate frisbee program and served as its president. He also founded the school's robotics program in his sophomore year, and his team placed third in the nation in the US First competition his junior year. The Mu Alpha Theta president has already earned a minor in mathematics from Florida State University, and he received the University of Virginia's Excellence Award for history and writing. Kircher's research on neuroanatomy has appeared in three publications, including Mankind Quarterly and Brain and Mind Magazine. He also plays the bassoon and bass guitar in the school band. Active in the community, Kircher accumulated more than 1,200 hours of service with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Maclay State Gardens and area nursing homes. He is the owner and founder of www.icrontic.com, which receives more than 3 million hits each month.
Last April, 23 student-athletes 11 boys and 12 girls were chosen from among more than 160 qualified nominees from the Associations 580 member high schools as the 2003 FHSAA Academic All-State Team. To be eligible for selection to the team, a student must be a graduating senior, must have a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 3.5 or better, and must have earned a varsity letter in at least two different sports during each of their junior and senior years.
The Florida High School Activities Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida. It has a membership of 700 middle, junior and senior high schools.
