Buchholz, St. Thomas Aquinas, Oak Hall sweep Dodge Sunshine Cup all-sports awards
GAINESVILLE Buchholz (Gainesville), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and Oak Hall (Gainesville) swept the top overall, boys and girls awards in their respective classifications in the final 2002-03 Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards point standings. Oviedo, Bolles (Jacksonville) and Trinity Prep (Winter Park) also claimed the top overall spot in their respective classifications.
Oviedo finished with 395.5 points, holding off Winter Park, which finished with 369.5 points. Buchholz (Gainesville) took Class 5A with 489 points 138 points better than second-place Seminole. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and Bolles (Jacksonville) continued their dominance, with the Raiders conquering Class 4A with an impressive 824 points, 357.5 points ahead of runner-up Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), and the Bulldogs coming back to take Class 3A with 590.5 points, just 33 points better than second place Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables). Trinity Prep (Winter Park), with 471 points, claimed the Class 2A crown by outdueling Lake Highland Prep (Orlando), which finished with 406.5 points. Oak Hall (Gainesville) closed out Class A with 395 points, as St. Johns Country Day (Orange Park) nabbed second place with 198.7 points.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Activities Association.
The 584 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2000, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 12 at the Wyndham Westshore Hotel in Tampa.
