Ward, Malloy win election to Board of Directors; two races remain undecided

GAINESVILLE – Incumbent William S. "Sam" Ward Jr., principal of Fleming Island High School, and Jeffrey A. Malloy, athletic director at Oak Hall School in Gainesville, have won election to the Florida High School Activities Association Board of Directors for the 2003-04 through 2005-06 school years.

Ward defeated Blountstown High School assistant principal Keith Summers in a run-off to win re-election to his Section 1 public school representative seat. Malloy defeated Richard S. Engle, athletic director at First Academy in Orlando, to win the Section 2 private school representative seat.

Board races in Sections 3 and 4 remain undecided.

In a three-way run-off for the Section 3 private school representative seat between Robert F. Cotter, athletic director at Clearwater Central Catholic High School; Edward L. Gilgenast, principal of Admiral Farragut Academy in St. Petersburg; and Peter N. Shepley, principal at Tampa Preparatory School; no one received a majority of the votes cast. A second run-off ballot will be cast between Cotter and Shepley, the two higher vote recipients, for the seat. That ballot will be mailed to all Section 3 member school representatives next week.

In Section 4, Coral Gables High School athletic director Harold Cole and Coral Springs High School athletic director Dianne Sanzari received an identical number of votes in the run-off election. In accordance with FHSAA Bylaws, that tie will be broken by the Board of Directors at its June 13 meeting in Tampa.
