Martin County, Buchholz, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bolles, Lake Highland Prep, Oak Hall lead Dodge Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings

GAINESVILLE – Martin County (Stuart), Buchholz (Gainesville), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bolles (Jacksonville), Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) and Oak Hall (Gainesville) lead their respective classifications following fall sports competition in the 2002-03 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.

Martin County, with 210 points, tops Class 6A with an 18.5-point advantage over second place Winter Park. Buchholz is well in the lead in Class 5A with 246 points, 69 points better than second place Niceville, which has 177 points. St. Thomas Aquinas leads Class 4A with 316 points, 83 points ahead of Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), which finished the fall with 233 points. Bolles, with 239 points, leads Class 3A by a 23.5-point margin over Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables), which has 215.5 points. Lake highland Prep, with 226 points, sports a mere 10.5-point lead in Class 2A over Trinity Prep (Winter Park), which has 215.5 points. Finally, Oak Hall finished the fall with 179.5 points – 49 points better than second place Holy Trinity Episcopal (Melbourne), which has 130.5 points.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Activities Association.

The 584 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2000, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these six administrative classifications in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2002-03 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 12 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
