Oviedo, Buchholz, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bolles, Lake Highland Prep, Oak Hall win 2001-02 Dodge Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup All-Sports Awards
GAINESVILLE Oviedo, Buchholz (Gainesville), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bolles (Jacksonville), Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) and Oak Hall (Gainesville) finshed atop their respective classifications in the 2001-02 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.
Oviedo finished with 362.5 points, coming from behind to edge perennial all-sports champion Winter Park by 22.5 points. Buchholz (Gainesville) took Class 5A with 409.6 points, as Fort Myers placed second with 354.5 points. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) and Bolles (Jacksonville) continued their dominance, with the Raiders taking Class 4A with an impressive 758.5 points, 354 points ahead of runner-up Chiles (Tallahassee), and the Bulldogs conquering Class 3A with 528 points, 146.5 points better than second place Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables). Lake Highland Prep (Orlando), with 599.5 points, claimed the Class 2A crown by holding off Westminster Academy (Fort Lauderdale), which finished with 410.5 points. Oak Hall (Gainesville) closed out Class A with 341.5 points, as Lakeland Christian takes second place with 299 points.
The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Activities Association.
The 577 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2000, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these six administrative classifications in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2000-01 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.
Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 13 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
