Winter Park, Buchholz, St. Thomas Aquinas, Bolles, Lake Highland Prep, St. Stephen’s Episcopal lead Dodge Floyd E. Lay Sunshine Cup all-sports award standings

GAINESVILLE – Winter Park, Buchholz (Gainesville), St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Bolles (Jacksonville), Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) and St. Stephen’s Episcopal (Bradenton) lead their respective classifications following fall sports competition in the 2001-02 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings.

Winter Park, with 218.5 points, holds a 45.5-point advantage over second place Spanish River (Boca Raton) in Class 6A. Buchholz is well in the lead in Class 5A with 243 points, 43.5 points better than second place Seminole, which has a 199.5 point average. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) leads Class 4A with 328 points, 102 points ahead of Plant (Tampa). Bolles, with 244 points, leads Class 3A by 53 points over Gulliver Prep (Coral Gables), which has 191 points. Lake Highland Prep (Orlando) is on top of Class 2A with 305 points, 91 points better than second place Maclay (Tallahassee), which has 214 points. Finally, St. Stephen’s Episcopal (Bradenton), with 134 points, leads Class A over second place Oak Hall (Gainesville) by only 4 points.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is presented by Dodge and Your Florida Dodge Dealers, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Activities Association.

The 577 member senior high schools have been divided into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 2000, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these six administrative classifications in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2000-01 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 13 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
