FHSAA announces 2001 Student SID Tour dates

GAINESVILLE – The Florida High School Activities Association is proud to announce the Fall 2001 workshop tour dates for the second year of its Student Sports Information Director Program.

The FHSAA Student SID Program is an exciting opportunity for students who may or may not be athletes, but who love sports, to play an active role in your school's athletic program. How? By assisting the athletic director and coaches in the marketing and promotion of your school's athletic teams, both within the immediate community and on a statewide basis. It's an opportunity to get experience in what could ultimately be a career on the college and/or professional levels.

For the athletic director and head coaches, it's an opportunity to get assistance from enthusiastic young students in performing duties that, while sometimes tedious and annoying, are necessary to the success of the athletic program. These duties include: distributing schedules to the news media; reporting results of contests to the news media; preparing and submitting team data and photo to the FHSAA for Florida Finals souvenir programs; and developing promotional posters and flyers for invitational tournaments and meets being hosted by your school – just to name a few.

The FHSAA communications department will conduct 18 Student SID workshops at the sites listed below in August and September. During these two-and-a-half-hour workshops, attendees will receive basic instruction in how to serve as the Student SID for their school.

At the introductory level, first-time workshop attendees are taught the basic skills necessary for being a Student SID, including:

• How to market your school's athletic program;
• How to work with the local media to get better coverage for your school's athletic program; and
• How to pursue a career in sports information and marketing.

At the advanced level, returning workshop attendees take part in more in-depth discussions about the tasks of being a Student SID and getting more involved in the sports industry. Session topics include:

• Running an effective media relations operation;
• Sports and technology; and
• a Student SID roundtable -- a student-led discussion about the different factors each of us face in our own school, ideas that work and ideas that don't work.

Representatives from local news media organizations, as well as representatives from sports information departments at local colleges and universities, are being invited to attend and share their expertise as well.

Each member school is encouraged to select one or more students – depending upon the size of the school's athletic program – to serve as Student SIDs. Each member school also is encouraged to send these students to the workshop being conducted in its area.

Students who are officially registered with the FHSAA as Student SIDs will be mailed identification cards that will entitle them to complimentary admission to all athletic contests in which their school's athletic teams are involved – including FHSAA State Series contests. They also will be invited to assist the FHSAA communications department in administering the media operations at FHSAA Florida Finals state championship events.

Additional information regarding the FHSAA Student SID Program will be mailed to schools in the coming weeks.
