Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Cardinal Gibbons, Bolles, Benjamin, Saddlebrook Prep lead Dodge Sunshine Cup/Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Award standings

GAINESVILLE – Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale), Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), Bolles (Jacksonville), Benjamin (North Palm Beach) and Saddlebrook Prep (Wesley Chapel) lead their respective classifications following fall sports competition in the 2001 Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings. Winter Park, with 230 points, holds a 53.5-point advantage over Spanish River (Boca Raton) in Class 6A. St. Thomas Aquinas is well in the lead in Class 5A with 329 points, 144.5 points better than second place Seminole, which has 184.5 points. Cardinal Gibbons leads Class 4A with 202 points, 20 points ahead of Bishop Moore (Orlando). Bolles, with 300 points, leads Class 3A by 21 points over Lake Highland Prep (Orlando), which has 279 points. Benjamin is on top of Class 2A with 152.5 points, a slim 15.5 points better than second place St. Stephen's Episcopal (Bradenton), which has 137 points. Finally, Saddlebrook Prep, with 83 points, leads Class A over second place Seven Rivers Christian (Lecanto) by 15 points.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. It is sponsored by The New Dodge, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Activities Association.

Due to the by-sport classification system implemented in 1999-2000, the 543 member senior high schools have been divided evenly into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 1999, which were used to discern the classifications as they are drawn up now. An all-sports award will be presented in each of these six administrative classifications in overall, girls and boys divisions at the conclusion of the 2000-01 school year. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 14 at the Wyndham Westshore in Tampa.
