Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Astronaut, Bolles, Benjamin, Saddlebrook Prep win 2000 Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards

GAINESVILLE – Winter Park, St. Thomas Aquinas, Astronaut, Bolles, Benjamin and Saddlebrook Prep finished atop their respective classifications in the 2000 Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards point standings.

Winter Park, with 356 points, finished 30.8 points ahead of Nease (St. Augustine) in Class 6A. St. Thomas Aquinas (Fort Lauderdale) won Class 5A with 713 points, 276 points better than second place Bishop Kenny (Jacksonville), which had 437 points. Astronaut (Titusville) topped Class 4A with 487 points, just 44 points ahead of Cardinal Gibbons (Fort Lauderdale), which won Class 4A last year. Bolles (Jacksonville), with 597.5 points, won Class 3A by an 85-point margin over Gulliver Prep (Miami), which had 512.5 points. Benjamin (North Palm Beach) claimed the Class 2A crown with 309 points, 102.5 points better than runner-up Port St. Joe, which finished with 206.5 points. Finally, Saddlebrook Prep (Wesley Chapel), with 139 points, won Class A over second-place Warner Christian (South Daytona) by 8.5 points.

The Dodge Sunshine Cup FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards is named in honor of Commissioner-Emeritus Floyd E. Lay, who led the Association from 1963 through 1980. The awards program is sponsored by Dodge, the official vehicle of the Florida High School Activities Association.

Due to the newly implemented by-sport classification system, the FHSAA Office this year changed the way the Dodge Sunshine Cup Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards Point Standings are calculated. The 543 member senior high schools have been divided evenly into six classifications for administrative purposes based on the enrollments submitted to the FHSAA Office in October 1999. An all-sports award is presented in each of these six administrative classifications in overall, girls and boys divisions. Points are awarded a school based on its finish in FHSAA State Series competition in each sport in the classification in which it has been assigned to compete. The top 32 places are scored. Points are awarded as follows: 50, 47, 44, 42, 40, 38, 36, 34, 32, 30, 28, 26, 24, 22, 20, 18, 16, 15, 14, 13, 12, 11, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1. When two or more schools are tied for a particular place in a sport, the points allotted for those places are shared equally by the schools that are tied. In the event of a tie for the award in either the overall, girls or boys divisions at the end of the school year, the following tiebreakers will be used: (1) number of state team championships won; (2) number of state team runners-up finishes; (3) number of regional team championships won; (4) number of regional team runners-up finishes; (5) number of district team championships won; and (6) number of district team runners-up finishes.

Winners will be honored at the FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet on June 15 at the Wyndham Westshore Hotel in Tampa.
