Chipley's Taylor edges out Orange Park's Ward for Section 1 Board seat; Miami Southridge's Burnside wins re-election to Section 4 Board seat

GAINESVILLE – Wes Taylor, principal of Chipley High School, has won election to the Florida High School Activities Association Board of Directors, defeating incumbent William S. Ward Jr., principal of Orange Park High School in the FHSAA's recently concluded run-off elections. Taylor edged Ward by a vote of 52-51 for the Section 1 public school seat.

Meanwhile, in Section 4, incumbent Bob Burnside, athletic director of Miami Southridge Senior High School, held off challenger Catherine McCarthy, athletic director of Western High School in Davie, by a vote of 41-31 to win re-election to the Board of Directors.

In other run-off elections, Jim Yancey, principal of Belleview High School, won re-election to the Section 2 Appeals Committee, defeating challenger Linda McQuade, athletic director of Hudson High School, 60-20; and Thomas McIntyre, principal of Melbourne High School, defeated Robert Bray, assistant principal of DeSoto County High School in Arcadia, 41-25 for a seat on the Section 3 Appeals Committee.

All winners take office July 1. They each will serve three-year terms.

The Florida High School Activities Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida. It has a membership of 615 middle, junior and senior high schools. It's four sectional appeals committees are provide the initial opportunity for appeals by member schools. It's Board of Directors is the executive authority, establishing all policies and regulations by which competitions are conducted, including the FHSAA state championship series. The Board of Directors also serves as the final court of appeal in all matters coming before it.
