Light agenda gives Board of Directors a chance to discuss a variety of items
GAINESVILLE The FHSAA Board of Directors took advantage of a light agenda to discuss a variety of topics at its Nov. 22 meeting in Gainesville.
The meeting, which lasted just 90 minutes, consisted of brief discussions on:
the grades that should be counted for reclassification;
the feasibility of the FHSAA purchasing and providing championship trophies on district and regional levels;
the golf season;
the implementation of the evaluation system for basketball officials; and
the addition of fax lines in the FHSAA Office.
Other than approval of the up-to-date financial statements, no action on any item was taken.
Howard Hinesley, Superintendent of Pinellas County Schools and President of the Board of Directors, commented that the brevity of the agenda was a tribute to the leadership of Commissioner Robert W. Hughes.
Hughes graciously accepted Hinesley's compliment, but warned Board members not to get used to the short meetings.
"Future meetings will be more substantive. I can promise you that," Hughes said, pointing out that at its February meeting the Board would have reports from the fall sports advisory committee to work through.
Hinesley announced his appointments to the three standing Board committees Finance, Operations and Legislative for the school year. They are:
Finance Larry Simmons, chairman; Jim Kirton, Lee Turner, John Stewart and Bill Montford;
Operations Sonny Hester, chairman; Bob Burnside, Norm Wein, Rick Misenti, Sam Ward and Hinesley; and
Legislative Doug Thomas, chairman; Randy Merrill, Buddy Vickers, Bill Keith, Misenti, Montford, and Association General Counsel Leonard Ireland.
Hinesley also appointed a special ad-hoc committee to oversee the negotiations with Hughes on the extension of his employment contract. The Commissioner Contract Extension Committee will be chaired by Hinesley, and will consist of Merrill, Keith, Simmons, Montford, Kirton and Ireland.
On Nov. 21, the Board of Directors met as an appellate body and considered appeals filed by American Heritage School (Plantation), Hollywood Christian School and Palm Beach Gardens High School. All three appeals were denied.
