Run-offs required in elections to fill seats on FHSAA Board of Directors
GAINESVILLE Incumbents Norman Wein and Jim Kirton, face run-offs with challengers in their respective bids to win election to second terms on the Florida High School Activities Association Board of Directors.
Wein, athletic director of Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, and his challenger, Bishop Kenny High School (Jacksonville) athletic director Bob West, both received 38 votes in the general election.
Kirton, principal of Seabreeze High School in Daytona Beach, was forced into a run-off with Vic Cervizzi, athletic director of Central High School in Brooksville. Kirton received 38 votes in the general election not enough for a majority of the 104 votes cast. Cervizzi received 24.
The 15-member FHSAA Board of Directors is the body responsible for developing guidelines, regulations, policies and procedures for the Association, which is the governing body for interscholastic athletics in Florida. It also serves as the final court of appeal in all requests for waivers of rules and appeals of decisions which come before it.
Because FHSAA Bylaws forbid any election from being initiated when school is not in session, the run-off elections will not be conducted until September. Both Wein and Kirton will continue to serve on the Board of Directors until those run-off elections are completed and their successors are chosen.
In other elections:
Merry Ortega, principal of Godby High School in Tallahassee, and David Ward, principal of Union County High School (Lake Butler), will be in a run-off election for the public school seat on the FHSAA Section 1 Appeals Committee. Ward is the incumbent.

Incumbent Eddie Sneed, principal of Jones High School in Orlando, did not run for re-election.
Keith Windham, principal of Lake Wales High School, won re-election to his public school seat on the FHSAA Section 3 Appeals Committee.
