FHSAA Board of Directors to meet June 19-20
GAINESVILLE The Florida High School Activities Association Board of Directors will hold its final meeting of the 1997-98 school year Friday & Saturday, June 19-20 at the Daytona Beach Hilton. The meeting is scheduled to begin at 8 a.m. both days.
Topping the agenda will be the selection of the Associations new commissioner. The Board of Directors will interview the finalists submitted by the search commissioner and choose the successor to current Commissioner Ron Davis, who has announced his retirement effective Jan. 15, 1999.
The finalists for the position are Ron Allen, current Deputy Commissioner of the FHSAA; Don Bridges, Director of Athletics for Polk County Schools; Bob Hughes, retiring Superintendent of Schools in Alachua County; and Bruce Patrick, coordinator of student activities and athletic programs for Fairfax County public schools in Fairfax, Va. A fifth finalist, Dr. Deborah Moore, Assistant Commissioner for the Ohio High School Athletic Association, has withdrawn her name from consideration.
In other business, the Board of Directors will make a final determination on the dates for the 1998-99 winter soccer and wrestling seasons.
Other activities occurring in conjunction with the Board of Directors meeting are:
The Eighth Annual FHSAA Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony and Awards Banquet (Fred E. Rozelle Sportsmanship Awards and Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards), 7 p.m., Thursday, June 18;
The Fourth Annual Gatorade/FHSAA Academic All-State Banquet, 7 p.m., Friday, June 19; and
The Annual Meeting of the FHSAA Membership, 10 a.m., Saturday, June 20.
Tickets for the banquets are $25 each and available for advance purchase through the FHSAA Office. Tickets will not be sold at the door for either event.
All meetings are open to the public.
