Lake Mary, St. Thomas Aquinas, Cardinal Gibbons, Bolles, Maclay, Bradenton Christian win 1997-98 Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards
GAINESVILLE Lake Mary, St. Thomas Aquinas, Cardinal Gibbons, Bolles, Maclay and Bradenton Christian high schools of the 1997-98 FHSAA Floyd E. Lay All-Sports Awards in their respective classifications.
Lake Mary won Class 6A; St. Thomas Aquinas of Fort Lauderdale won Class 5A; Cardinal Gibbons of Fort Lauderdale won Class 4A; Bolles of Jacksonville won Class 3A; Maclay of Tallahassee won Class 2A; and Bradenton Christian won Class A.
The awards program, which is named for Floyd E. Lay, who was Executive Secretary (now known as Commissioner) of the Association from 1963-80, is sponsored by The New Dodge the official vehicle of Florida high school sports.
The six overall winners also finished atop the girls program standings in their respective classifications, but there were some differences in the first-place finishers in boys competition where St. Thomas Aquinas in Class 5A and Bolles in Class 3A were the only schools to sweep the awards. Miami Southridge finished first in Class 6A boys competition; Jesuit of Tampa took Class 4A boys honors; Westminster of Fort Lauderdale placed first amongst Class 2A boys programs; and St. Johns Country Day of Orange Park had the top Class A boys program.
The standings, which are compiled and updated following the conclusion each sports season, rank member senior high schools based on their finish against schools in their classification in FHSAA State Series competition. Twenty points are awarded for a first-place finish, 18 for second place, 16 for third, 14 for fourth, 12 for fifth, 11 for sixth, 10 for seventh, 9 for eighth, 8 for ninth, 7 for 10th, 6 for 11th, 5 for 12th, 4 for 13th, 3 for 14th, 2 for 15th and 1 for 16th.
Points are divided evenly between schools which share finishes in state series competition. For example, in team sports, the FHSAA does not award a third place, fourth place, etc. In these cases, the points for third place and fourth place a total of 30 are shared evenly (15 points each) by the two schools which lose in the semifinal round. The four schools which lose in the regional finals share the points for fifth through eighth place (10.5 points each) and the eight schools which lost in the regional semifinals share the points for ninth through 16th place (4.5 points each).
The final 1997-98 standings for all classifications are as follows:
