Fourth Annual Gatorade/FHSAA Academic All-State Team announced
GAINESVILLE Twenty-four young men and women with grade point averages of 3.73 or better 10 of them multi-sport athletes comprise the Fourth Annual Florida High School Activities Association Academic All-State Team, announced today by the FHSAA Office in Gainesville. The Academic All-State program is sponsored by Gatorade.
The 24 team members 12 boys and 12 girls were selected from among 178 eligible nominees who were submitted by their respective member schools. To be eligible for selection to the team, a student must be a graduating senior, must have a cumulative unweighted grade point average of 3.5 or better, and must have earned a varsity letter in at least two different sports during their junior and senior years.
Each student-athlete named to the FHSAA Academic All-State Team will receive a $500 scholarship, as well as a commemorative medallion, and will be honored at the Fourth Annual FHSAA Academic All-State Team Banquet on Friday, June 19 at the Daytona Beach Hilton. At that banquet, one male and one female member of the team will be announced as the FHSAA Scholar-Athletes of the Year. The two recipients of this award, which is the highest honor the FHSAA can bestow on a student-athlete, will receive an additional $2,500 scholarship as well as a trophy.
Tickets for the banquet are $25 and must be ordered in advance throught the FHSAA Office by contacting Jack Watford, Director of Communications, at (352) 372-9551 ext. 180, by June 12. Tickets will not be sold at the door.

Girls
Carrie Lynn Benson, Fort Lauderdale High School, Fort Lauderdale Carrie is the daughter of Donald Benson and Sandra Benson-Belben. She has a 3.907 grade point average and is ranked third in her 340-member senior class. Carrie has earned varsity letters in two sports soccer and tennis in both her junior and senior years. Carrie will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville and study business.
Elisabeth H. Fisher, Bradenton Christian School, Bradenton Elisabeth is the daughter of Dan and Judy Fisher. She has a 3.9686 grade point average and is the valedictorian of a class of 51 students. Elisabeth has earned varsity letters in volleyball and basketball in both her junior and senior years. She plans to attend Furman University in Greenville, S.C. where she will pursue a degree in pre-medicine.
Faith Glavey, Crystal River High School, Crystal River Faith is the daughter of Sandy and Phil Glavey. She has a 3.981 grade point average and is the valedictorian in a class of 238 students. Faith has earned varsity letters in both basketball and swimming as a junior and senior. She will attend Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C. and study English.
Karyn M. Hall, Oviedo High School, Oviedo Karyn is the daughter of Daryl and Janet Hall. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked sixth in a graduating class of 581 seniors. Karyn has earned varsity letters in cross country and soccer in both her junior and senior years. She will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville, but is undecided on her course of study.
Carissa Johnson, Immokalee High School, Immokalee Carissa is the daughter of Jack and Ann Johnson. She has a 3.9583 grade point average and is ranked second in a class of 161 students. Carissa has earned varsity letters in volleyball, soccer and softball in both her junior and senior years. She will attend Harding University in Seracy, Ark., where she study math education and business management.
Janese Lynette Latimer, Jones High School, Orlando Janese is the daughter Mr. and Mrs. John A. Latimer. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is the valedictorian of a class of 203 students. Janese has earned varsity letters as a junior in basketball, track & field and volleyball, and as a senior in basketball, track & field and cross country. She is undecided as to where she will attend college, but plans to study biology in preparation for medical school.
Jennifer Susan Mattox, Chipley High School, Chipley Jennifer is the daughter of Steve and Patrice Mattox. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is the valedictorian of a class of 115 students. Jennifer has earned varsity letters in basketball and softball in both her junior and senior years. She will attend Tallahassee Community College where she will major in psychology in preparation for pre-law.
Jennifer M. Perry, Palm Bay High School, Melbourne Jennifer is the daughter of Joseph and Nancy Perry. She has a 3.9987 grade point average and is ranked sixth in a class of 573 students. Jennifer has earned varsity letters in basketball, cross country, softball and track & field in both her junior and senior years. She will attend the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., where she plans to major in civil engineering.
Deborah Ann Thomas, Stanton College Preparatory School, Jacksonville Deborah is the daughter of William and Nancy Thomas. She has a 3.96 grade point average and is ranked fourth in a 378-member class. Deborah has earned varsity letters in cross country, swimming & diving and track & field in both her junior and senior years. She will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville and major in engineering.
Amanda Welcomer, Osceola High School, Kissimmee Amanda is the daughter of Dale and Cheryl Welcomer. She has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked second in a class of 370 students. Amanda has earned varsity letters in softball and volleyball in both her junior and senior years. Amanda will attend Belmont Abbey College in Belmont, N.C., and major in business.
Megan Elise Westfall, Lincoln High School, Tallahassee Megan is the daughter of Kurt and Lucy Westfall. She has a 3.89 grade point average and is ranked ninth in a 457-member class. Megan earned varsity letters in cross country, swimming & diving and track & field. She will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville but is undecided on a course of study.
Corrie Anne White, Coral Gables High School, Coral Gables Corrie is the daughter of Bill and Lisa White. She has a 3.920 grade point average and is ranked 18th in a 569-member class. Corrie has earned varsity letters in softball and volleyball in both her junior and senior years. She will attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., and will pursue studies in French and international studies.
Boys
Eric P. Berger, Okeechobee High School, Okeechobee Eric is the son of Philip and Susan Berger. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is valedictorian of a 290-member senior class. Eric has earned varsity letters in soccer and swimming & diving in both his junior and senior years. He will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville and plans to study business and law.
Jeremy H. Green, Titusville High School, Titusville Jeremy is the son of R. Ted and Patty H. Green. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is valedictorian of a 390-member senior class. Jeremy has earned varsity letters in baseball, football and soccer in both his junior and senior years. He will attend the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., and pursue a course of study in engineering.
James Michael Henry, Pensacola High School, Pensacola James is the son of Franklin and Christine Henry. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked fourth in a class of 386 students. James has earned varsity letters in cross country, soccer and track & field in both his junior and senior years. He will attend the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., and plans to major in engineering.
Brent D. Hicks, Lake Weir High School, Ocala Brent is the son of Dan and Suzanne Hicks. He has a 3.836 grade point average and is valedictorian of a 217-member graduating class. Brent has earned varsity letters in football, golf and soccer as a junior and in football, soccer and tennis as a senion. He will attend either Wake Forest University in Winston-Salem, N.C.; Furman University in Greenville, N.C.; or Queens College in Charlotte, N.C., and plans to major in political science and business pre-law.
Theodore Randolph Howell, Marianna High School, Marianna Theodore is the son of Randy and Jan Howell. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is valedictorian of a 177-member senior class. Theodore has earned varsity letters in cross country, soccer and track & field as a junior and in cross country and track & field as a senior. He will attend the University of Florida in Gainesville and plans to study engineering.
Chris Kramer, Lely High School, Naples Chris is the son of Fred and Sally Kramer. He has a 3.9020 grade point average and is ranked second in a 294-member senior class. Chris earned varsity letters in football and wrestling in both his junior and senior years. He will attend Princeton University in Princeton, N.J., but is undecided on his major.
Isaac Michael Morford, Keystone Heights High School, Keystone Heights Isaac is the son of G. Robert and Dorothy B. Morford. He has a 3.877 grade point average and is ranked fourth in a 144-member class. Isaac earned varsity letters in football, basketball and baseball in both his junior and senior years. He will attend the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., and pursue a course of study in business and criminal justice. Isaacs older brother, Zac, was a member of the 1996 FHSAA Academic All-State Team.
Scott R. Myers, Gulf High School, New Port Richey Scott is the son of Robert F. and Cynthia J. Myers. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is ranked second in a 317-member senior class. Scott has earned varsity letters in cross country, track & field and soccer as a junior and in cross country and track & field as a senior. He will attend either the University of Florida in Gainesville and plans to study either pre-medicine or physical therapy.
Clark Henderson Saylor, Leesburg High School, Leesburg Clark is the son of Bruce and Pam Saylor. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is valedictorian of a 330-member graduating class. Clark has earned varsity letters in football, soccer and baseball as a junior and in football and baseball as a senior. He will attend the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va., and plans to major in either sciences or pre-medicine.
Nathan August Schuett, South Fork High School, Stuart Nathan is the son of Craig and Mary Schuett. He has a 4.0 grade point average and is valedictorian of a 316-member senior class. Nathan has earned varsity letters in basketball and swimming & diving as a junior and in baseball, basketball and swimming & diving as a senior. He will attend Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., where he plans to study either computer science or electrical engineering.
Epiphanios Constantine Stylianos, Olympic Heights High School, Boca Raton Epiphanios is the son of Andrew and Anna Stylianos. He has a 3.9423 grade point average and is ranked third in a class of 410 students. He has earned varsity letters in cross country, soccer and track & field in both his junior and senior years. He will attend Stanford University in Stanford, Calif., and pursue a degree in engineering.
Michael Ryan Tobey, Gulliver Preparatory School, Miami Michael is the son of Chuck and Donna Tobey. He has a 3.73 grade point average. Michael has earned varsity letters in cross country and track & field in both his junior and senior years. He will attend either Syracuse University, the University of Miami, UCLA or the University of North Carolina and plans to study motion pictures and film.
The Florida High School Activities Association is the governing body for interscholastic athletic competition in Florida. It has a membership of 603 middle, junior and senior high schools.
